July 23, 2010

Premier Dr Ewart Brown JP welcomed past and present Cup Match players at the Annual Cup Match reception held yesterday [July 22] on the Camden lawn.

And while he pointed out that his support was firmly behind team that dons light and dark blue, the Premier displayed good sportsmanship yesterday in extending his best wishes to both St. George’s and Somerset Cricket Clubs leading up to the Annual Classic which will be held at the Somerset Cricket Club on July 29 and July 30.

And in addition to past and present players, yesterday’s Camden event also saw potential cricketers, who tomorrow will be vying for a spot on both Cup Match teams, Cabinet Ministers and community members all convene on the lawn to celebrate the upcoming cricket extravaganza.

Highlights of the evening saw current players such as Lionel Cann and Janeiro Tucker mingling with veterans of the sport, such as Calvin “Bummy” Symonds and brothers, Raymond Durham and Stuart Durham, who played in the 1950s and 1960s Classic respectively.

The Premier hailed last evening’s gathering as one that brought together the best of what the Island has to offer – “dedication to sport and pride in culture and tradition”.
