29th Bermuda Open Karate Championships
The Bermuda Karate Institute hosted the 29th Bermuda Open Karate Championships yesterday [Apr.17] at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess Hotel.
Zenji Ingham, who won his first forms title as a junior white belt in the first edition of the event, won the black belt forms grandchampionship 4/1 over veteran Bobby Smith. CompetitorReuben Bean, who had narrowly lost to Mr Ingham 3/2 in the under 45 empty hand group, was disqualified from the rest of the event for rude behaviour to an official.
For the black belt weapons grandchampionship, Garon Wilkinson edged Bobby Smith 3/2. Junior forms grandchampions were Joshua Monteiro [novice boys], Corey Outerbridge [intermediate boys], Kaelin Cox [advanced boys], Jashae Allen-Lamontagne [novice girls], and Ryley Mason [intermediate girl]. Ryley also won the only female sparring match of the day, defeating Tayah Smith 8/3.
In black belt mens point sparring Sentwali Woolridge blanked Vernson Mills 9/0 to take the title for men under 45 and continued to defeat unopposed over 45 champion Gregory Eversley 6/4. Jeron Gunness bested Jokiya Trott 6/4 in the first round of intermediate point sparring and shut out Kevin Rubaine 4/0 for the gold medal in that category. Jeron also won the final match of the day in a three found K-1 style fight in a points victory over Shaun Richards [kickboxing].
