David Cox Denies Shooting Yankee Rawlins

June 7, 2011

David Cox Bermuda June 1 2011-1-4David Cox has taken the stand and denied shooting 47-year-old Raymond Troy “Yankee” Rawlins – who was gunned down on Court Street in August 2010.

32-year-old David Jahwell Cox [pictured] of Club Road, Smiths is charged with premeditated murder and using a firearm to commit an indictable offence. He denies the charges.

The court previously heard that Mr Rawlins was shot 16 times, viewed the CCTV footage of the shooting and heard that Mr Cox’s DNA was on a baseball cap found outside the crime scene, as well as on a glove found in a trash can by the getaway car.  Testimony was also presented that the guns used to kill Mr Rawlins were used in a number of other shootings, and that Mr Rawlins had ties to Parkside, while Mr Cox was said to have ties to 42nd.

With the Crown having finished presenting its case in the trial, this morning the accused took the witness stand, and just before the lunch break, a new witness was called.

From the witness stand and under cross-examination by Crown Prosecutor Cindy Clarke, Mr Cox has denied owning the grey baseball cap that the Crown says was worn by the glove wearing man who shot Mr Rawlins, and which was seen on the CCTV tape of the shooting incident. Still under cross-examination, Mr Cox denied having ever fired a gun.

Questioned directly by the Crown Prosecutor: “Have you ever fired a gun?” Mr Cox replied: “I have never fired a gun.”

Questioned about wearing gloves, Mr Cox said that because he was always fixing bikes, he wore gloves in order to protect his hands. Asked where he got his gloves from, he said that he sometimes got them from his uncle, used gloves that were lying about, or borrowed gloves.

Questioned more closely, Mr Cox said: “I am telling the truth about wearing gloves.”

To the Crown’s ending suggestion that he, David Cox, had shot and killed Mr Rawlins; the accused replied: “I did not shoot Yankee Rawlins.”

Explaining his whereabouts on the night of the shooting, Mr Cox said that he had been at the Mid Atlantic Boat in Devonshire that night. He said that he had ridden there on a friend’s bike.

After a short break the Jury returned and a witness was called to testify on behalf of the accused. Responding to QC John Perry, this new witness testified to picking up the accused from the boat club just before midnight, giving the accused a fifteen minute ride home along North Shore Road, and dropping Mr Cox off just after midnight at the bus layby at Claytown in Bailey’s Bay.

QC Perry asked the witness if he had seen or had any contact with David Cox since that night. The witness replied that he had not. The Crown had just started cross-examining the witness when the Court adjourned for its lunch break.

Mr Cox denies the charges. The case resumes this afternoon…

Wow – when certain names come up on Bernews crime reports, the blogs go quiet as sh*t. Where the hell are all the big mouth’s like Terry and Ganga Mon when the real cases present themselves? So much to say when some young punk steals a scooter but let someone get shot 16 times and not one blogger has an opinion…..bunch of pretender community activists!!

    • Ganja mon says:

Im glad you all were looking forward to hearing my opinion. Whats to say about this case?? The guy is obv. getting a [edited for legal reasons] verdict.

With that said I personally like to comment on topics other then court cases involving gun crimes.

  2. Down 'n' Dirty says:

@ Green Card ..Yes they tend to steer clear , out of fear , so he who has a keen ear let him hear , me dear , that when business is deadly serious only them with a stout heart would care to share .

  3. hey says:

    what is your point exactly?

  4. bda for life says:

I was thinking the same thing but I see that terry person is busy commenting on the cruise ship worker who was fighting at snorkel park. You are absolutely right, when certain cases are reported on bernews the critics names that I normally read never have any thing to say. Clearly one can tell that they just post to make fun of pepole but they stay far away when cases involving alleged gang members are being reported on….they are all a bunch of a holes in my opinion…I thought only I noticed that…good observation my friend

  5. check it out says:

wow you guys are right…i never really noticed that before. @hey, I think their point is (and correct me if i’m wrong) that these persons named are quicker to discredit someone else’s comment and make pointed statements on certain issues than target their comments and observations on the more hard-hitting problems in our society, like the one above. not to say that fighting isn’t bad but a situation like this calls for more seriousness than what they fain to present. if you look at it, they don’t really give much solutions to the presented problems only opinions and harsh remarks on someone else’s opinion.

    • Ganja mon says:

Ahhhh…yea sure! If thats what you think. I never discredit ones opinion but when I know their just assuming or saying anything because “they heard” I will let them know. Simple

      • check it out says:

thank you for making that clear.
