Guilty Plea: $8,000 Dishonesty Charge

June 7, 2011

Yesterday [June 6] in Magistrates Court 29-year-old Sandy’s parish resident Jamesha Valerie Van Lowe pleaded guilty to five counts stemming from two attempts to defraud both the Bank of N T Butterfield and her great-uncle.

All five counts arose from Ms Van Lowe’s two attempts to get the Bank to pay her $8,000 drawn from an account in the name of Gladwyn Simons.

The Prosecutor’s evidence was that on the afternoon of 1st October 2010, Ms Van Lowe arrived at the St George’s branch of the Bank of N T Butterfield, where Bank staff became suspicious.

Bank staff found inconsistencies and refused the transaction. Ms Van Lowe left the St George’s branch. The Branch Manager contacted other BNTB facilities and warned them.

Ms Van Lowe then went to Hamilton where she made a fresh attempt to draw $8,000 from Mr Simon’s account. However, already alerted bank staff called Police and she was arrested.

In Court, she said through her lawyer that she needed the funds because she owed rent. She was ordered, by Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo, to submit to a Social Inquiry Report and to return to Court on 21 July 2011 for sentencing.
