Photo Set #2: 2011 Non-Mariners Race

August 1, 2011

Numerous locals made their way west by both land and sea for the annual Non-Mariners Race took place at Mangrove Bay in Sandys Parish yesterday [July 31]

There were three “boats” entered in this years event; the ‘Non-Government Bus’ sank at the very start of the race leaving the ‘sailors’ to scramble to bring the ‘boat’ remnants back to shore. The Arts Centre in Dockyard created ‘Stinky Fish’, and the third and final entry was ‘VIP Reserved Seating’ by Team 2 Seconds.

The event started years ago after a group of friends debated the flotation properties of baby carriages after one too many drinks. They decided to attempt to sail a baby carriage from Albuoy’s Point to Whites Island, and the unsuccessful boating attempt was the start of the Non-Mariners Race.

The motto of the Non-Mariners Race is “The sea shall not have them. The sea does not want them,” which judging by the complete lack of sea-faring ability of the crafts present, was adhered to. You can view a 90 minute replay of the live webcast here, and photos below.
