Video: Premier Responds To Dr Brown’s Statement

April 12, 2012

Addressing former Premier Dr Ewart Brown’s statement about the Governor earlier this week, Premier Paula Cox said she doesn’t think “there is any need for comment,” and also stated that the former Premier was “speaking in his private and personal capacity.”

Dr Brown held a press conference on Tuesday, saying that Governor Sir Richard Gozney has failed in his duty, has harmed the people of Bermuda, and noted that his legal team has written to the British Foreign Office setting out what he said were the Governor’s “sins of omission and commission during his tenure.”

Premier Cox had previously declined the media requests for comment on the topic, however when questioned about the matter at today’s [Apr.12] PLP candidate announcement she gave a short statement.

“I don’t think there is any need for comment. The former Premier was speaking in his private and personal capacity,” said Premier Cox.

“The Government of Bermuda has already clearly indicated in the public domain by way of the response to the Office of the Auditor General. Our position with regard to the cheques, and that is it.

“But of course I think that democracy is the cornerstone of an enlightened community. And thus you may disapprove of what people say, but you defend to the death the right to say it,” she concluded.

  1. OBA: ‘No Point In Commenting On Dr Brown’s Feud’ | Bernews.com | April 12, 2012
  1. Ron De Corner says:

The Premier has done the right thing. The less official response that egomaniac gets – the better.

Personally I think he has just done irrepairable damage to the PLP. I’m certain that was his intention.

The PLP will likely lose the election now and DREB has helped this in his own typical fashion. Destroy, destroy, destroy. I wonder what he will destroy next? As long as it is not in Bermuda but back in his homeland – we shouldn’t care.

    • What about the People says:

How has be done harm to the PLP with this statement. I don’t agree that he’s done harm. I do agree that he’s reminded people who may have forgotten that he was the target of a nasty conspiracy to bring down the PLP Government.

      • My two cents says:

There has to be a reason they made a decision to do something like this, otherwise it makes no sense. What gain would they make by “bringing down the PLP government”? Of course they made a terrible decision to do such a thing, but what did the government do to make them want to do this? AS usual, there is a missing piece of the puzzle.

        • Yup says:

DREB still has a lot of fire in his belly. He wants power back!!!!!

      • Pastor Syl says:

@ What about the People: I don’t know about a conspiracy, but it seemed to me that most folks then were not so much interested in bringing down the PLP, just in getting rid of Dr. Brown. I can’t necessarily say the same now, but back then, he was seen as the root of most of our troubles.

        • all clogged up says:

agree with the good pastor on this one

      • Poetic Justice says:

Who said it was a conspiracy to bring down the PLP? That is an oppinion unless you can provide some form of proof that this was the intent.

There is no need to raise any conspiracies to bring down this PLP government they have done enough of their own volition to warrant them being voted out if you cant see or accept that I can only imagine you are bereft of common sense or the ability to apply reason and logic to form a conclusion based on the facts of the matter.

Fact- Bermuda is worst off since the PLP took office.

Fact- The E Brown administration took Bermuda from 2.5M debt to 1.25B in four years

Fact- The incurred debt over this period had nothing to do with the recession

    • Finally left! says:

I would tend to agree with you, i am happy that the premier has distanced herself from EB int hsi case… the big question is really the relationship between EB and PLP..

Its good she’s ignored this one instance…. but will she keep this stance as he tries to steam roll through bermuda during the upcoming election?

    • Cleancut says:

Dr.Brown is probably finding it very hard to live with himself right now. The Ultimate tragedy for him would be for the PLP to loose the next General Election. He is frightened he may loose his Presidential demeanor forever. Col. Burch and Dr. Brown will definitely go down in history as the worst damaging Government Ministers this island has ever witnessed. Dr. Brown is presently trying to scoop up a few more votes by attacking the Governor, i am sure he’s not finished yet before the Election.

  2. Hail our Chief says:

Great response Auntie Paula! At least you have the balls to give the right and just response unlike those in OBA just trying to wave the perverbal carrot before an election. God Save Paula and God Save the Queen. Both Queens in my book!

    • concerned says:

OBA and PLP’s response were the same thing you idiot! They both said “NO COMMENT.” And OBA responded first.

      • Come correct says:

Wrong! Same words but one was from a “black” party and one was from a “white” party. Some people just can’t see past skin color no matter how the candidates change.

This situation is really starting to irritate me, why don’t WE AS A PEOPLE demand the parties to split up, and we as voters, vote in the best candidates? Magic! The race card just disappeared, then maybe we can see ourselves as Bermudians for once.

      • specialgirl4you says:

WHy does the OBA/UBP fans have to resort to name calling? Premier Cox is smart intelligent leader and she knows the real deal!!

    • Richard says:

      *testicular fortitude

  3. What about the People says:

    Agreed Premier Cox.

Let the press obsess over Ewart, I secretly think they miss him.

    • specialgirl4you says:

Yes they do miss him, that is why he is able to demand the attention of the OBA/UBP. Also, they do not want the real truth to come out !!!

  4. verbal kint says:

If he was speakig in his “private and personal capacity”, who is (or was) paying his private and personal legal bills?

  5. Bewildered says:

A nice approach, but Dr Brown referred in many places to “the Bermuda Government” so he was not speaking in a personal capacity. The PLP was elected in 1998 and no change of Premier changes that. It is the same “Government” now as in late 1998.

    • My two cents says:

That is kind of what I was thinking. If it is personal, then why is he allowed to speak on behalf of government as he isn’t a government official? Going forward, I guess this means anyone can hold a press conference and speak on behalf of the Bermuda gov. Good to know.

      • all clogged up says:

pre election tactics…..it’s the Big Bad Wolf’s fault….death to Colonialism!!!!! haahhaahahhaahha too funny, only a rank idiot will fall for this smoke screen again

BTW I’m black with no party affiliation

      • Itsaboutallofus says:

He did not speak on behalf of Government. He spoke on behalf of his reputation, which was maligned while he was Premier. It amazes me the depths of misunderstanding of many on these blogs. No wonder most of them support the OBA.

        • Shaking the Head says:

Incorrect, you are merely parrotting the false information spoken by Paula Cox to try and distance herself and the PLP from Dr. Brown. Read what he sent to London. Also he has stated publicly he was speaking on behalf of not just himself, but also his administration. He also complained that the Governor was not protecting Bermuda. Nowhere has he stated that this is a personal and private matter. Inded what normal person would have called a press conference and sent such a submission to London on purely personal matters. The laws and courts are the recourse if he feels he has been maligned.

  6. Bermy's Finest says:

Verbal Kint..you forget the man is a doctor and has personal wealth prior to him becoming Premier. I serious doubt the Government of the day will have anything to do with Ewart and his accusations. This is something he feels he has to do for his own personal reasons.
Well done Madam Premier stay far away from this one.

    • 32n64w says:

“the man is a doctor and has personal wealth prior to him becoming Premier”

      Incorrect.

  7. terry says:

What did you expect her to say.

Ewart has Queens Councel. You know how much they charge an hour?

It’s cat and mouse they play.

    Block of cheese anyone?

  8. I to am glad that Premier Cox did not malign herself with the comments of Dr.Ewart Brown and I was glad to see the approach she took as she has more pressing issues to deal with such as the sins of ommisions and comissions of her former leader because she has sure been left with alot to clean up. So I take this oppurtunity to applaud how she handled it and must note that there are those that believe she is running this ship the best that she can with what she had been handed and that she is not taking orders from her former boss, maybe somewhere down the near future we would see that the irregularities within Government was there before she became leader and that she might have been the finance minister but once the funds are allocated from that office, the ministers are responsible for the use or mis -use of those funds, i just wonder if there are any cookie jars within any of the ministies of overnment,I might be over reacting, they dont use cookie jars, just the gaming machines they confiscated because the pay out is better.

    • Come correct says:

I agree, but I’m not so sure about Premier Cox, I believe she is a strong woman and has what it takes to be a strong leader, but I’m not so sure her concience is clear, time will tell, and if she does the right thing it will speak volumes and show she’s not “politically neutered” (or watever it was) but “taking her moth*(f@(&in balls back”…but only time will tell.

      • pepper says:

Paula has no clue what is going on !!!!!!she is being led by the former premier…who is running this island… Paula Cox, think about your dad… he had the respect of all Bermudians… you have lost all respect from we Bermudians !!!!!! Do not let Brown get away with his crap, you and we all know he has an agenda !!!! PLEASE do not be a part of this ..

  9. Truth (Original) says:

Nothing rallies the PLP base like some good ol fashioned “get whitey” speech. I wonder if Premier Cox is happy to have Ewart out there galvanizing their base against “whitey”. She will enjoy the lift in the polls without getting her hands dirty.

I don’t think she will meaningfully distance herself from this rhetoric at all. Ultimately, she (and the PLP) will benefit from it. I anticipate that he will turn up the volume louder as the election draws near.

  10. Victor says:

A strong leader would tell the truth and denounce Dreb for what we all know he is – and some. Furthermore, as any engineer knows, a missing Cog and the engine grinds to a halt, even if it is just a Hog feeding machine.

  11. Cancer says:

Bernews – Since when did the spelling of cheques change???

However Paula is a weak leader – once Paula is gone along with the PLP hopefully we’ll be rid of Brown once and for all…. Paula is weak – everyone knows that she is not leadership material.

To stop all this ongoing controversy and perceived corruption vote in the OBA at the next election for better and improved Bermuda!

  12. smith says:

now back to the candidate rollout…

PLEASE go away Lister – you are useless.

  13. Just sayin says:

    Get a backbone Cox

  14. Itsaboutallofus says:

    Good Job Premier Cox!

  15. Cleancut says:

Welcome back Terry Lister, as you probably know by now anything goes under the Cox regime, as long as you can get people to vote you in, like Col. Burch, you could just about commit murder and still be supported by a Cog.

  16. The nitty gritty says:

Desperate times call for desperate measures.
If you see you may lose the next election, you also see the consequences.
    A lost paycheck
    Loss of power
The opposition digging deep into the goings on over the last 13 years
Being out of work ,,who the heck’s gonna hire you after that 13 yr performance?
    PUBLIC ACCESS TO INFORMATION
Highly paid investigative journalists given work permits to use PATI to unravel the real truth
Specialgirl4us has to eat her words etc
with all that in mind, DREB has been somehow encouraged to put his Howard days lessons to good use and stir things up along racial lines so they can point to it all on one side and tell their soon to be ex-voters “AHA LOOK see what they are saying, those evil racists trying to take us back to the bad old days”
Stay quiet ya’all and work together as Bermudians should, to rid ourselves of this poor performing management team. After that the time is right to start investing and spending your money again and get this train arolling back to some hope and prosperity for all.

  17. Testicular Fortitude says:

    Testicular Fortitude,

…….democracy, u may dissaprove of what I say but defend my right to speak and disapprove

………..please quit and give the job to Zane, Jonathan, Kim Wilson, Terry, even Derrick but please just go

    we need leadership

  18. 1minute says:

As the great doctor hates the UK with such a passion, why wasn’t there a referendum on indenpence during his reign?

    • King George III A.K.A. Tommy Chong says:

That’s because a sly dictator doesn’t play the checkmate till the time is right. Ewart doesn’t need to be premier to influence plp. He’s set his boston tea party in motion without even having a seat in government & plp can now turn around & play innocent.

  19. Seven Nations Army A.K.A. Tommy Chong says:

“I don’t think there is any need for comment. The former Premier was speaking in his private and personal capacity,” said Premier Cox. Sure Premier Cox I believe you! Especially after reading todays news about the treaty signed with the Obama administration. HMMMM! An agreement signed with the Obama administration & Bermuda government seems like deja vue but it can’t be because I don’t see paula as premier in this premonition. Though I do recall these words, “We had to deceive you.” but in a deeper voice than paula’s.
