Bermuda Arts Council: $18,000 In Scholarships

November 26, 2012

Today the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Patrice Minors, recognised this year’s recipients of the Bermuda Arts Council’s student scholarship grants.

Yesha Townsend, Kioshi Burgess and Juanee Verdelle Scott were awarded grants in the amount of $10,000, $5,000 and $3,000 respectively to aid in their educational pursuits.

Yesha Townsend is studying for her BA in Music (composition) and Creative Writing (Poetry and Fiction) at the McNally Smith College of Music, Minnesota. Kioshi Burgess will start his studies for his BA in Performing Arts at Philadelphia University of the Arts in January and Juanee Verdelle Scott is studying for her BA in Film & Television Production at the University of Westminster.

Minister Minors said, “Each year, we raise the profile of the Arts Council by presenting a series of awards to Bermudians who have made significant contributions to our arts and cultural heritage. We honour them with the Council’s Long Service Awards, the Patron Awards and the Founder’s Awards.

“Another aspect of the Council’s mission to promote the arts in our community is to ensure our young people who are studying careers in the arts are provided with the support they need. And we have selected these three students based on their proven record of excellence, commitment and talent.”

Minister Minors continued, “I am of the view that it is critical that community organisations play an avid role in getting involved in the lives of our young people to ensure that they are unhindered in gaining access to opportunities that will help further their learning and development.

“I am also of the view that the most effective impact on the socio-economic issues that we face as a community can only be achieved by ensuring that there is equal access to quality educational opportunities. The Bermuda Arts Council today through these financial grants have demonstrated their commitment to youth development in the arts. And today is proof positive of Government coming together with our community partners for the benefit of our young people.”
