Record 45 Shavees For St. Baldrick’s Tomorrow

March 14, 2013

Tomorrow [Mar 15], for the seventh year in a row [6th year as an officially registered site], Saltus students will have their heads shaved to raise funds for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and P.A.L.S. in the Saltus Upper Primary Hall starting at 8:30 a.m.

This year will set a record with 48 participants [45 shavees for St. Baldrick’s and 3 for “Locks of Love”]! 41 Upper Primary boys, three fathers and Director of Academic Support at Saltus, Mrs. Karen Lusher, are having their heads shaved; in addition, two girls and one mother are having their hair cut to donate to “Locks of Love” [a charity that provides hairpieces to children who have lost their hair to cancer and other medical conditions].

Three Secondary students — SGY2 Kenedi Edwards, S11 Lianne McKeown and S7 Connor Somerville — will be going to BAA later in the day to have their heads shaved [Lianne is having her hair cut first and donating it to “Children With Hair Loss”].

Leading up to the head shaving on Friday, these Upper Primary students and their families have been busy raising additional funds in a number of ways including: lemonade stands, bake sales, “Casual for a Cure” Fridays at their parents’ offices, and a pizza and bake sale at the annual Saltus Association Summer Camp and Activities Fair.

On Friday, the Upper Primary Department will be selling chocolate milk and popcorn to raise even more funds. As of March 14th, Upper Primary students had raised $74,687 towards their goal of $75,000.

P.A.L.S. President and CEO, Ms. Ann Smith Gordon, M.B.E., J.P., will on hand to show support for the shavees as funds for St. Baldrick’s may be directed to P.A.L.S. which supports five childhood cancer research projects at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston as well as local children with cancer. In addition to the Upper Primary event, Saltus Lower Primary and Secondary students will have a Green Grub day on Friday with donations going to P.A.L.S.

Saltus parent and trustee Mrs. Lisa Baumgartner is the event organiser and her husband, Mark, is volunteer treasurer. S5 teacher Mrs. Laurel Burgess has organised the ten volunteer barbers from Salon Visage, Cutting Room, The Hideaway at Surf Side, Bang Bang and The Arcade. S4 teacher Brittany Adams is the “Locks of Love” coordinator.
