Videos: Norwegian Breakaway Arrives In Bermuda
[Updated with videos] The Norwegian Breakaway cruise ship arrived in Bermuda this morning [May 15] making her maiden voyage from New York. She took pilot off St David’s, and is now making her way to Dockyard.
The 1063-foot long ship is the largest cruise ship to ever visit Bermuda, and is expected to be carrying around 4,000 passengers and a substantial amount of crew members. Work has been ongoing at the Heritage Wharf in Dockyard for the past few weeks to prepare for the ship’s arrival.
Access to King and Heritage Wharfs will be restricted today to officials and public transportation vehicles in light of the inaugural visit of the Norwegian Breakaway. Ministry officials also said that there will be limited parking available in the area.

Great show from the gombeys and band! We should be doing this for every ship, every time just like the old days (even firing those cannons used to be normal) – I’m sure those on Celebrity Cruises ‘Summit’ (the boat next to the Breakaway) would welcome that kind of excitement upon landing too!

Well done OBA officials for just getting it done. Not the first or last picking up the pieces of that calamitous PLP Government we somehow endured.

I’m guessing that some of these people still think the PLP are in power… If it wasn’t for the OBA, the ship would of sailed right by as the PLP built the dock too small…

Just bear in mind that although the PLP did get the ship to sail here, had the OBA not pushed to get the dock complete that ship would have sailed right on by us. I will give a thank you to those who worked hard to get the dock ready on time. Now lets hope we can keep everything up at Dockyard running the way it should until the last ship leaves in October/November.

Way to come together Kat, I always wonder the mentality of people out there that would prefer to see something fail and affect all Bermuda just because it’s not your party or friends who will take the credit. For all the people be you Bermudian, Foreigners, from Private Sector or the Government Sector who made this happen (finished or not, over budget or not); “Thank-you”.
Just imagine having to tender visitors off this monster over the next few days!!!!! That would have been a nightmare. I continue to cross my fingers everything runs as close to smooth as can with this number of visitors.

…now lets do our part Bermuda.
So once the hoopla of its arrival has quietened down when will we be told the projections of how much money the ship and its passengers actually inject into the economy vs. how much it cost us to bring in/host the ship every year? The bill is already at $22+ million and counting!
It is a beautiful sight to see such a mega ship with so many on it visiting us for the first time and Bermuda we do have a tourism product,and always have but I just hope we put more into reviving our tourism,because having these ships here is not enough.
We need bed space in this country and at an affordable rate,we have for to long as far back as prior to the U.B.P in office lost focus on that which made us who we are,International Business has done well for Bermuda,but it is ashamed that we did not invest a lot of the millions of dollars we made from the International sector back into our tourism product but took a delight in waisting billions of tax payers dollars to live a lavish lifestyle.
Now time is upon us and soon will be even more evident then what we see now,if we dont get things in place within the next five years that can advance us into the future,with our tourism market.that we will have ships here and coming but very little profit is being made for Bermuda as tourist dont spend mega dollars on land when they travel by sea.
So as we know this is a blog that goes viral and around the globe,lets remember that the world is wathcing our little success and other jurisdictions are already planning how to capatilize on it better then us,because there product is not better then ours.they just know how to present it better with results.
So a mega ship in the harbor is nothing to be overjoyed about,this season they are here and the next they could be gone.give us something more tangable that can be enjoyed by our vistors and locals alike.HOTELS AND BED SPACE,that give Bermudians jobs.
One thing the OBA always has a bunch of kiss a$$ on here and so does the PLP. How about we stop the OBA vs PLP and just work together for a better Bermuda. The PLP got the boat and the OBA fixed the dock.

I wish more Bermudians would be more flexible in their thought process, it’s too much strong wills fixed to one or other side of the fence. Fact is both sides of the fence have great things to offer & Bermuda would greatly benefit if petty personalities would dissolve & make way for a more harmonious union between the two parties & their followers.
I have said it many times on here that I don’t follow any given party but rather the individual representatives of the given parties based on their performance. However I have seen plenty of biased views be posted on here that goes against actual facts to do nothing more then to either bolster or shame a given party & nothing more. Please can we as a people mature & grow past such pettiness??
I agree with you 100%. People need to remember that party support is split almost 50/50 (equally) so these negative comments do not help to foster unity in the community. Regardless of who you support the Government now belongs to everyone not just the members of the OBA. We all need our government to succeed.
I’m really excited about having the maiden voyage to take place here in Bermuda. The boat is docked …let the visitors and the locals synergize to make the visit so much better than expected!!!!!

Good job to all involved, both from the former administration and the present. Only someone who is not brain washed to follow this divisive form of government, can truly see the good and bad of both sides. The blind sheeples on both sides cannot, they are driven by too much hate and ignorance, to give credit, where credit is due.
The PLP was not all bad and the OBA will not be, all good. Both will contribute in some way, shape or form. Now, can you imagine how far we could go, only if we both sides, cooperating for the betterment of Bermuda. Unfortunately, the polarizing nature of party politics, has generated too much hate for such progress to be made.

And is only around the eighth largest cruise ship out there, the Disney Dream and Fantasy are longer at 1,115′ but not as high with 14 passenger decks and then there is the Royal Carribean Oasis class, their Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, they are the biggest ones out there right now at 1,186′ and 16 passangers decks
Any idea how much it cost to build that behemoth?

There would be a ship in the city, one or two in St.Geo and one in Dockyard if the OBA had their way. That way St.Geo wouldn’t be a ghost town and the city would have some revenue. Dockyard is a bore after hours.

its too bad that so many people aint informed the ship is tied to the original dock and not to the new construction. There are no new fenders installed – they concrated one berthing dock out of 4 this week and its going be a while before they can use it. So if the dock was so bad why is the ship tied to it – the contingency plan to use the original dock. NOW they can only work ONE day a week cause there’s going be ships using the dock all week except saturdays it took them 3 months to do one out of four – so now just one day a week to work – it must mean nine months before its finished and for this we have paid $22M dollars If Sunrise and Crisson are so good why was Gilbert Lopes Masons up there pouring concrete on Monday….. So who has the wool over whose eyes? Rumour has it costs are at $30M no wonder no one was allowed out on the dock for the last three months. the other thing is we were told there were now professionals on the job – all i saw was barges flying skull and cross bones flag and a black seal flag – not even a Bermuda flag (oh I forgot no Bermudians worked on the job)
It’s on time, on budget, and the ship docked safely. There are new dolphins and the old wharf, built 3 years ago, was strengthened.

As far as the politics,in my opinion,the visit of the ship was the brain child of the PLP.After the wharf was built including the failings of the PLP it had to be repaired and adjusted/extended to accommodate this and other ships,the new government was faced with this task. They managed to get a temporary fix/solution in place. The temporary back up plan(smart decision) was in place weeks ago,this during and after the time that Trevor Moniz continuosly stated that the wharf would be completed, either because of his ignorance(lack of knowledge)inability and or being unwilling to openly acknowledge that the wharf would not be completed.Unfortunately the wharf is not completed ,as some people seem to think,or will not admit.I do congratulate The OBA on the fact they did get the wharf ready in some capacity to accomodate The Norwegian Breakaway.
I like this, the PLP had the cruise ship booked and the OBA fixed the dock. The partnership that worked.
However, I understand that the old PLP dock was used!
