Golf: Aon Benfield Fecchio Cup Day #2 Results

January 4, 2014

The howling wind was the big story in the second round of the 31st Annual Aon Benfield Fecchio Cup on Friday [Jan 3], and the juniors deserve a huge amount of credit for finishing their rounds at Port Royal Golf Course.

As expected, the more exposed holes proved to be the most difficult, with the 7th, 15th and 16th catching out a number of players, but with the winds as high as they were, every hole had the potential for high scores.

In the 16 – 18 Division, an unfortunate oversight by the overnight leader Cory DeSilva in signing an incorrect scorecard resulted in his Disqualification after the round. As a result, Sam Wehmeyer is on track to defend his title as he takes an eight shot lead into the final round.

All players in this Division struggled in the tough conditions, with the top four players separated by only four strokes on the day. Mykal Donkin, Arriek Douglas and Daniel Hetzel will try to chase down Sam and do battle for second with only six shots separating them. Jordan Saunders rounds out the division after a second round score of 111.

The 13 – 15 Division remains tight heading into day two, with overnight leader Mikus Ming dropping into third place following a round of 98 which was a decent score considering the conditions.

The two low rounds of the day in the entire field came from Alex Mason and Dakota Lamb who each shot a very respectable 90, pushing themselves to first and second in the division. Mason takes a two stroke lead into the final round where he will be looking to bring home his first BJGA major event.

Kheary Swan is still in with an outside chance in fourth place and ten shots behind the lead. Brady Cordeiro, Joe Waters and Benjamin Barnett round out the division.

Kenny Leseur took advantage of a few missteps by overnight leader Luke Watson and shot the low round of the day in the open red division with a 104. Kenny will take an 11 shot lead into the final round after Luke struggled in the wind on the back nine, finishing with 121 on the day. The rest of the field is very tightly bunched with only three shots separating 2nd from 5th.

Tyler Emery and Joe Watson are joint third following rounds of the 112 and 111, respectively. Alex Withers-Clarke put together a good run over the final 5 holes to finish with 106 and get himself into the race for second place and an outside chance at winning. Alex was the only player in the field to have a lower score today than in the first round! John Dragonetti rounds out the division with a 125 today.
