Gloria Burgess Bermuda nurseOn May 5, 2014, the Bermuda Nurses Association announced Mrs. Gloria Burgess [pictured left] as the 2014 Nurse of the Year, honouring her for her more than 35 years of service to the good health of Bermuda.

In responding to the recognition she’s received, Ms. Burgess said, “I was actually in shock because, although I knew about my nomination, I realized that the other nominees were also very special people. I was travelling back to the island on that day, but my plane was diverted back to Philadelphia due to problems with the radar, causing me to miss the presentation.

“I had to ask my daughter to go and represent me and I got the news of my success via my phone.

“I have held many different positions during the course of my career. I am a registered nurse and midwife and worked for over 14 years at the King Edward Memorial Hospital as an Obstetric Nurse, and then as an Assistant Unit Coordinator for the Ante and Postnatal section of the Maternity Ward.

“I then moved into Public Health where I have worked as a Public Health Nurse in the Maternal Health and Family Planning Clinic on Victoria Street for many years. I was promoted to Supervisor of the Maternal Health and Family Planning Clinic in February of last year where I presently still work.

“I have always had a love and compassion for people and a desire to help and that is what pulled me into the nursing profession. As a general registered nurse, my life has been enriched by being able to provide a holistic nursing care for patients. This means not only caring for the physical needs of the individual but also providing care for the whole person; the physical, psychological, and spiritual.

“As an Obstetric Nurse and Midwife, caring for pregnant women, providing education for them, and helping to bring new healthy lives into the world has been a great joy. As a Public Health Nurse, I have enjoyed helping to provide the resources for their holistic care, empowering patients by teaching them how to engage in healthy behaviors and assisting them in changing unhealthy ones.

“As a supervisor, I have the pleasure of overseeing the Maternal Health and Family Program, collaborating with other health care professionals, creating policies, and implementing changes for the benefit of my patients.

“I am also involved in the community. I am a pastor’s wife and am the coordinator of the Women’s Ministry at my church and have included presentations on women’s health, nutrition, and aspects of general health. I have also worked as a mentor to women in the CoEd Facility.

“These things have brought me and still bring me much joy and satisfaction. I am humbled, appreciative, and deeply honoured to have received this wonderful award,” added Ms. Burgess.
