Video: CARIFTA Athletes Receive Certificates

Minister of Community, Culture and Sports Wayne Scott met with the 2014 CARIFTA athletes today [May 1], and presented them with certificates and congratulated them for their outstanding performances in Aruba and Martinique.

Minister Scott said, “On behalf of the Ministry of Community, Culture and Sports and the Department of Youth, Sport and Recreation, I take this opportunity to commend you on your outstanding performance and accomplishments at the recently concluded CARIFTA Games.

“Your exemplary attitude and commitment to excellence epitomizes all that is good about Bermuda. You have inspired all of Bermuda to aspire to achieve the lofty standards you have established.

“As the Minister responsible for Youth and Sport I salute you and encourage you to continue on your journey to greatness.”

As far as track and field, Bermuda won five medals in total, placing 9th on the overall medal table. Kyrah Scraders won two medals [800m & 1500m] including a gold, while Sakari Famous [high jump], Jahnai Perinchief [high jump], and Dage Minors [1500m] all added a medal each. Both Kyrah Scraders and Jahnai Perinchief qualified for the Youth Olympics, which will be held in August 2014 in Nanjing, China.

In addition, Tiara DeRosa competed in the shot put & discus, Azaire Smith competed in the high jump, Taahira Butterfield competed in the 100m & 200m, Kionje Somner contested the 200m & 400m, Daniel Oatley competed in the 3000m, David Darrell competed in the 800m & 1500m, Michaiah Robinson competed in the 400m & 800m, Chas Smith competed in the triple jump & long jump, while Justin Donawa represented Bermuda in the triple jump.

In swimming, Bermuda captured 7 gold medals, 11 silver medals and 4 bronze medals along with two CARIFTA records. Emma Harvey was the age group champion in the 11-12 girls category, recording the most points of all swimmers in the division.

The island’s 14-strong swimming team consisted of Shannon Hassell, Madelyn Moore, Ashley Irby, Philip Hagen, Jesse Washington, Emma Harvey, Alex Pilgrim, Alyssa Paynter, Keagan Wooley, Brett Smith, Nicholas Brando, Jude Moseley, Ethan Daley and Isabelle Dutranoit.
