Upcoming: Annual Non-Mariners Race On Aug 3

July 5, 2014

The annual Non-Mariners Race will be held on Sunday August 3rd, with the always popular ‘non-event’ involving strange and unusual watercraft taking to the water, most sinking within minutes.

Hosted by the Society of Non Mariners, the ‘non-event’ will be held at the Sandys Boat Club at Mangrove Bay in Sandys parish, getting underway at around noon. Entry fee for each Non-Craft is $25 and each Non-Craft nominates a charity of their choice. The winner’s charity will receive a cash prize in their name.

The Non-Mariners Race started decades ago when a group of drinking friends debated the flotation properties of baby carriages, and ended up trying to sail a baby carriage from Albuoy’s Point to Whites Island. This unsuccessful boating attempt was the start of what is now an annual tradition.

Non-Activities include:

Non-Colors Raising 11:53am + 87 sec.
Non-Penguins Fly Past 1:08pm + 29 sec.
Non-Noodle Race 1:22pm + 96 sec.
Non-Memorial to our Mascot 2:13pm + 32 sec.
Non-Calypso Pipe Band 2:32pm + 109 sec.
Non-Craft Race 3:29pm + 62 sec.
Non-Trophy & Non-Prizegiving 5:47pm + 56 sec

This is great! I will row my jet ski in nice and early with a plentiful supply of Sam Adams for me and Smirnoff Ice’s for the numerous Yums who always flock to my jet ski! This event is the highlight of my social calendar. I hope the seas aren’t as rough as last year when Commodore JB had to come rescue his wife and I!

@ Double M Four Twos:It’s somewhat ironic you mentioning getting an early start…I quote, “with a plentiful supply of Sam Adams for me and Smirnoff Ice’s for numerous Yums who always flock to my jet ski!”
This is an occasion where we witness many boats in an extremely limited confinement and yes, many are consuming alcohol which is the point I wish to make. At this and other boating events many drink and become cocky and aren’t as careful behind the wheel as they maybe under different circumstances. Personally I’d like to see the Marine Police along with the Bermuda Regiment marine division deployed as well to top-up security…There are always people swimming or wading and the last thing needed is a careless individual/s causing,(I say gingerly) an accident”

I’ll be sailing my Cannonier sinking ship !
