Update 10.48am: Speaking at the scene, Mr Caines said: “There is an ominous reality right now. This is two in the space of five days, and we’ve had about three other serious road traffic collisions. It is very clear…people now have to consider this a major issue in our community.
“In the last 10 years, we’ve lost upwards of 150 plus men and women on our roads. This is considered a national health crisis. We’re going to need all of the agencies on board, as this, clearly, is not a good sign for our community – two road fatalities and we’re only five days into 2015.”
Update 11.59am: Police have made an amendment; saying that their initial classification of the death of Mr. Timothy Wright following a collision on New Year’s Eve in 2014 as the first for 2015 was incorrect, and his death is actually classified as the 16th for 2014, as it is noted by the date of the collision. This means that today’s unfortunate collision marks the first road traffic fatality for 2015.
