People Gather To Protest Immigration Policies

March 25, 2015

[Updated] People are presently gathering on the Cabinet Grounds today [March 25] with a rally set to take place at 5.30pm to protest the immigration policies, with the flyer for the event saying “Enough is Enough! Put an end to OBA’s immigration policies.” As of this writing [5.24pm] things are just getting underway, however we will update as able.

Update 5.51pm: Minister Michael Fahy is at the Cabinet Grounds and told Bernews, “We are very proud with the OBA government about what we have managed to achieve with our immigration reform and the approaches that we have taken.

“Obviously today, people have a legitimate right to protest whatever they think they need to protest; we have no issue with that. Where I have a severe concern, is that some of these protests are not based within fact, and the allegation has been made that we have not been collaborative in our approach; I fundamentally disagree with that.”

“We had a very open and collaborative approach in respect to all the work permit policy reform we made. We made it very well-known to the community in terms of what we have done and achieved with immigration law to increase penalties for employers that breach immigration policy and law, and the same with employees.

“We increased the penalties. It is this government that has put in place a national training plan to see opportunities for our Bermudians. It is this government that is going to be bringing $930 million in inward investment to make sure that we have opportunities for Bermudians in terms of tourism jobs and construction jobs.

“I don’t buy what is being said by the opposition with respect to what is happening today. I just don’t buy it. The results will speak for themselves,” added Minister Fahy.

Shadow Minister of Immigration Walton Brown is also present, and told Bernews, “The reason for putting this together is to try to persuade the government to commit to a process of collaboration and consensus building around an issue that has fundamentally divided this country: immigration policy.

“Immigration policy has been immersed in the realm of race and politics for more than 50 years and we continue to have policies put in place that are inherently divisive.

“One party agrees with one side for one set of policies, the other party disagrees, and we’re just going to have a divided country.”

“And so what we want to do is have a genuine collaborative undertaking to ensure that there is a consensus between the two parties on the key elements of immigration policy going forward.

“We’re here to send a message to government and we’re looking for a genuine response that answers the questions that we’ve raised: will you commit to a collaborative undertaking to take the issue of immigration policy out of the very negative terrain that it’s operated on for the last 50 years?

“My feelings [about the gathering crowd] are positive. We organized this at very short notice. It was, in essence, an effort to test public sentiment for such an undertaking, because we just found out that the governemnt is doing the immigration bill tonight. So it was arranged within 24 hours and we’ll see.

“Power always resides with the people and the people will tell you the extent to which they’re concerned about an issue by their numbers, so we’ll see.”

Update 6.04pm: Mr Brown is now addressing the crowd, and asked people to walk into the Senate chambers [the Senate is now sitting] and show they want true co-operation with immigration reform.

Update 6.08pm: The crowd has entered the Senate chamber and the Senate President is asking them all to sit down and not talk. “We will have order in this place,” she said.

Update 6.13pm: The Senate President kept asking people to keep their voices down and to sit down, and she eventually said the Senate will adjourn for 2 hours — until 8.10pm.

Update 6.16pm: People are singing “We shall not be moved.”

Update 7.00pm: People are still on the grounds.

Update 8.07pm: Many people have left, however some still remain on the grounds

  1. James says:

    who is their graphic designer?

    • Come Correct says:

Apparently the “white mental illness” sign lady.

      • Dave says:

So it looks like about sixty or so supporters showed up !!!!!

      • MAKE MY DAY says:

They must ALL be the PLP / BIU band-of-fools!! They do NOT have a “clue”!!!

    • Serious says:

All these issues facing our country and you’re worried about an ‘e’ that’s merged with the ‘r’. What an idiot!!

      • hmmm says:

        Huh?

      • Lebron says:

        @ Serious, you cannot be….

Every country has issues, ours seem to be managed pretty well right now, unlike the prior decade.

The OBA will go when they are ELECTED out, not when some shouty people show up in the cabinet grounds. The same shouty people that always show up.

        • Say What? says:

If the country was being managed well we wouldn’t have people protesting because no one listens.

Only ones who think that the country is being managed well are the rich!

          • Come Correct says:

You aink even serious right now. 14 years the plp were in, correct me if I’m wrong, I only remember one group of protesters on cabinet grounds. Remember the lynch mob? Now, after the 5 year reign of terror, the oba being in for 2 years all of a sudden certain people want to protest every week? When I say certain people, “white mental illness” sign lady is aweful present. What are her thoughts on the Uighers, not so grand atlantic, whites island lease, the DLBE trust? Let’s start there, I wouldn’t want to burden anyone with too much to answer at once.

          • hmmm says:

So what would you do to manage the country.

Oh , you have zero money.
Oh and you own $2 billion
Oh and you need to start making savings because that debt is coming due.
Oh you don’t have enough cash to pay CS wages.
Oh and you only found this out when you opened the box.

The clock is ticking….tick tock tick tock

            • Come Correct says:

Me…I’d call in my BIU debt. The one for no wildcat strikes. Once I crushed the BIU, I’d fund a program to prevent… mental illness starting with a “get the fattin plp back in” fundraiser to further **** up the island I call home…but that’s me.

            • Awake says:

Yup, the clock is ticking. God help us all when we become rated as a THIRD WORLD country!

    • Mockingjay says:

Democracy at its BEST, just loving it.

      • jt says:

I agree…with the exception of the unruly behaviour…go for it.
Thing is, government still must act in the interests of the majority (democracy, as you say).

        • Mockingjay says:

          Watch that majority propaganda.
South Africa is a GOOD example of that.

          • jt says:

            What?

          • foldgers says:

I used to wonder why so many protests now….part of the reason we are in such a financial mess is because of the financial mismanagement that happened.. The interest on almost 2 billion dollars is staggering and must be reigned in.. however a lot of people are forgetting the root of this debt…. but back to why protest now… because there will be no backlash within the ranks… its ok to voice your displeasure now.. than to lay any blame on your party… you wont be ostracised… you will look like really good supporters… but…. you looking like something else when you act clueless to the fact the the national debt jumped from less than half a million to over a billion dollars in 14 years… just stating the facts…march on

  2. Bermyman says:

That is the ‘White Mental Illness’ sign lady!

  3. Fidel C says:

i am getting sick and tired of this S888. Build the damn thing and do it quickly. D888 A8888 anti everything yet had years of spending OUR money on what????????My comment based on the silly picture referring to airport job. What has that got to do with immigration???

    • Skink says:

truth… but the airport should be managed by Bermudians, the canadian company should build the project with bermudians and train qualified bermduians while building

  4. St Kool says:

This is so ridiculous it’s actually funny now.

    • Build a Better Bermuda says:

It would be funny, except that an elected official has encouraged people to go into the senate and be disrespectful to the chamber. Let’s face the fact, the PLP do not want collaboration, they want to make the decisions. What the PLP really want is to get together with the OBA and drag things out. They know that they don’t agree with what the OBA want to do, they will drag out evertything under the guise of deliberation. In the mean time, the country will slide further down hill and they can blame the OBA for lack of progress. In the end, should they be elected back in they will then ignore the OBA, as the plain truth is, they have no belief in collaboration with anyone doesn’t share their view. Collaboration is a phrase to the PLP leadership, not a practice… hypocrisy.

  5. smdh over and over says:

Once again a ” Let’s gather for this topic, while we really ment this topic”. These people are a joke…

  6. lucky 7 says:

yawn, *rolling eyes* get over yourselves.

  7. campervan says:

I totally support your right to protest and demonstrate.
Personally, like the movement “Britain first”, I also find your message distasteful, sinister, selfish and dangerously leaning towards hate mongering
However I do still support your right to air your views.

  8. bullshot says:

That is definitely the white mental illness ladies handwriting! She strikes again.
seriously though, when will these people learn to read that FACTS before turning out to a protest. The immigration changes have NOTHING to do with the OBA, they were signed in by a COURT OF LAW after the decision by the PLP in 2000-2001 to grant PRCs the right to stay.
In a side note, did people leave paid jobs to hold up these signs and stand on a hill? They would be doing themselves and their families a favor by working. But who cares about that, right?

Ps does anyone know where I can Commission this lady? Her message is absolutely bat*** insane but I love her cursive! !

  9. swing voter says:

I just woke up….protest again? umma go back to sleep

  10. Ann says:

I think they will do anything with the hopes of getting on camera, wonder if they hired a band this time! When will the ignorance stop!

  11. Dylan says:

Well its normal isn’t it Government make change and guess who objects … when will they start to put country in front of political future. If they treated the Bible the same way as they do every bill amended or proposed i wonder ……

  12. Cardine Alice says:

These people are destroying Bermuda’s international reputation. Is it any wonder the smart money, tourists, employees forget to welcominng places like Cayman?

    • Confused OBA Voter says:

Have you thought that it is the responsibility of the government to be inclusive and transparent?

The OBA are just as much at fault. This is not the governance we voted for.

I hope this is a wakeup call for the OBA, start governing like you promised before the election!

      • hmmm says:

        PLP plant alert !!!!!!!!!!
        propaganda Alert !!!!!!!

Why does the PLP feel it needs to trick and decieve voters.

      • umok says:

Confused OBA Voter understands both sides of the political spectrum. It’s good to see unbiased posts. This immigration policy is not even that hard to fix. The OBA is being a bit “extreme” and “over the top” when it comes to the immigration policy.

      • Voter (original) says:

More so than the last government

    • Raymond Ray says:

@ Cardine Alice: That my friend is their plan…Sad yes but true :-( The intent is to obstruct any progress in-spite of their Party name ie. Progressive Labour Party.

      • Raymond Ray says:

By the way, Premier Michael Dunkley and all other members of the One Bermuda Alliance, do not permit the few to intimidate you because they sure as hell aren’t / can’t intimidate your supporters!

        • Come Correct says:

I bet your red n white cheerleaders outfit is cute.

    • mixitup says:

You sound ludicrous! These people are peacefully expressing their democratic rights! Whatever smart money, tourist, or business chooses to go elsewhere because of this, has made a good choice because they wont be welcomed here! Never heard a more ridiculous statement.

      • hmmm says:

the anti foreigner politics of the PLP and their minions is doing our once welcoming and friendly country no good whatsover.

      • Sickofantz says:

Surely it is democratic to allow a debate on immigration to go ahead in parliament between our elected representatives. It is UNdemocratic to attempt to halt this.

      • Soooo says:

So tell me why did the senate have to retire… Oh … Because they couldn’t do the job we pay them to because of the noise!! Protesters should have all been removed !

        • mixitup says:

So all of a sudden the Senate actually does something?! You people. Make me Holla..

      • Raymond Ray says:

Pitts Bay • 2 hours ago

This had been extracted from a competitive source of Public information:
“Hundreds of protesters – Were you there or are you taking Walton Brown’s prediction number? I have looked at all the pictures you used and other new outlets used and just can’t see even 50 or 100, never mind hundreds. Out of that [50?, 75? ????] you need to discount the press and spectators, so come on, give us all an accurate idea of how many people were actually protesting.”
I also agree, this is false information and as a matter of fact it can shed a bad image on Bermuda / Bermudians

  13. Skeptic says:

I hope the folks protesting can think about their ancestry – I suspect that the majority of them are from families who have benefited from a more open immigration policy over the past 50 years. They should be the last to slam the door in the face of other potential new citizens who we desperately need to pay off the debts of their preferred political party.

    • Raymond Ray says:

@ Skeptic: It’s a “colour issue” and has “F%c&s” to do with politics! Why do they who represent the Opposition Party behave like we’re seeing them behaving?
The crowds aren’t going to put any fear into nor will cause a change in the Government; so get over it and on with the job you get paid for!

    • Mockingjay says:

So its ok for Americans to feel the same to Mexicans, Europeans to Africans and Asians, etc.
      Hello…………

      • campervan says:

        No its not okay.
        That is ignorant too.

      • C James says:

Irrelevant as usual Mockingay. Also, you forgot to mention PRCs.You are slipping.

      • W900Bx3 says:

How does that compare when people here are on work permits or PRC’s are here legally?

      • jt says:

You really think that line of thought supports your view?

  14. fuqcryinoutloud says:

Just have the sgt at arms remove anyone who is disruptive. Simple. If they try and come back in, police arrest.

  15. ha says:

Brown! your party had 14 years to do reform… now you acting like it is the end of the world.. get over it!!

  16. Entertainment says:

This is a perfect example of why this country needs to open up immigration even further. We need more genes in this pool!

    • Fidel C says:

      best comment ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Come Correct says:

      Oooooooo no they di’nt.

    • Mockingjay says:

@ Entertaiment, that’s why we have so many Light skinned people in Bermuda, our genes were compromised against our will !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • Come Correct says:

Whaaat?! I guess every village has its idiot.

      • Creamy says:

Another raciist rant. Do you help Peggy make her signs?

    • stunned.... says:

      precisely

looking at the general level of the lack of comprehension of basic facts and conditions makes me believe that there are many people here that are more related to each other than they think or know.

  17. Just wondering says:

Interesting – if under the brilliance of the PLP (who in no small part caused a lot of the ex pat flight) every time they (PLP) screwed up there was a protest on the cabinet grounds the result would have been a permanent protest!! Why doesn’t isn’t this simple fact understandable? WE NEED FOREIGN WORKERS TO SURVIVE!!! The PLP policies were an abject disaster – no argument – so let the OBA try doing something without disrupting the democratic process!!

    • Confused OBA Voter says:

I think that’s a bit disingenuous. Before the election the OBA said the PLP granted the most work permits ever.

To say the PLP are anti-foreigner is not accurate. They are pro Bermudian which is something I support.

The OBA started off well by cracking down on bad employers and getting rid of term limits, but these new changes, loosening restrictions on land and rolling back protections against fronting.

That’s not what I voted for, and the OBA need to stop being arrogant!

      • Creamy says:

You call yourself an “OBA voter”, and you accuse someone else of being disingenuous?

        • Kangoocar says:

Creamy, don’t listen to that just another Betty from Alaska Hall/plp!!! Total nonsense from them!!! But I while I am writing this I will make it known that I have now had enough of a few certain Bermudian staff members who have been constantly sick for the last month and will soon to be looking to replace their sorry behinds with people that actually want to work!! And if it has to be foreign people I get so be it! I have had enough of those bermudians that don’t appreciate their jobs!!! I am Bermudian but I sure as hell will not lose my business over relying on them!!! Enough is enough after 30 yrs of their nonsense!!!

          • BETTTYTRUMP says:

Your Obsessed over BetttyTrump. …keep holding the biggest paid OBA blogger Kangaroocar to the wicket…….blindfaithfulness is killing Kangaroocar. …

          • Varied says:

Is that fair for you to air your business’s dirty laundry in a public forum though? Your employees and customers may not appreciate those remarks.

          • alarmed says:

I could have sworn it was just last week you where stating, in so many words, how much your staff members love and appreciate you.. the world becomes more dynamic with each passing day.

            • Kangoocar says:

What part of, ” a few members ” of my staff that have been constantly sick, did you miss?? Anyway those same few are going to find themselves real soon, sitting outside Financial Assistance!!!

              • Mockingjay says:

Ill be sick too, minimal wage, little or no insurance, pension not paid up to date, poor working conditions, etc.
Perfect recipe for cheap foreign labor.

        • Griz says:

@creamy so what are you saying, that in order to be an OBA voter you have to agree with everything they do or say? Just need clarification

          • Creamy says:

No, I’m pointing out that he did not vote OBA, despite the name he uses. He’s a liar.

      • hmmm says:

“That’s not what I voted for, and the OBA need to stop being arrogant!”

        Huh?

Arrogance is hallmark of the PLP.

      • Noncents says:

        @ Confused.

I can see why you are confused. When are people going to realize that we need to open our borders. Making the island more business friendly will have trickle down effects that will benefit all Bermudians. More jobs –Less reliance on Civil Service– No more furlough days! These 300 people showed up because I suspect they listened to a certain radio host that notoriously stirs the pot with half truths and lies that do nothing more than incite an emotional response that has little basis in facts.

Wake up Bermuda. The more international investment we get here, the better off we all will be.

Now lets go beat the Bahamas

      • Islander says:

The PLP opened the flood gates for all of the cleaning companies, kitchen everybody n family look around see the jobs in esso gas stations, van drives and the list goes on so yes the pulp granted a ton of permits

      • Sickofantz says:

Dear Confused. The PLP did issue a lot of work permits. I think you will find that a large number of them were for Hotel and Hospitality positions and construction. These jobs are NOT the ‘Job creator’ positions which this policy covers.

    • Fidel C says:

A simple question. Is it the mind set or determination of the plp to IGNORE their failures but still OPPOSE any and everything the govt tries to fix ????????????? of their past???????????

  18. lifetime says:

FYI – Gonna be a long hot summer!

  19. Sid says:

I am having a harder time convincing myself that Bermuda is a friendly place since these semi-annual anti-foreigner rallies have started.

    • Confused OBA Voter says:

This isn’t anti-foreigner, we need to be honest with each other!

This is not just about labour it’s also about land.

      • jt says:

Then they don’t really understand the policy and it’s impact in that regard. ..beyond what WB says.

      • Dockyard Lackey says:

You truly have the correct pen name. I think you should retitle yourself STORK! Your dumb brain is so far buried beneath the sand you should have choked to death by now. You are not and never have been a voter of any party other than your beloved PLP(Pathetic Little Parasites).

      • Sickofantz says:

How is it about land please explain?

        • Ringmaster says:

It was the PLP who increased the amount of land available to non Bermudians from 2,000 acres to 2,500 acres. A 25% increase. Not the OBA. The PLP also agreed SDOs on virgin woodland at Tuckers Point to become development sites. LaVerne Furbert when she was a Senator even went out her way to complain about the noise by people against that but still voted for it. Now back to your point about land?

      • Fidel C says:

get real it is about stirring up cr** any way the plp can without ADMITTING they made mistakes ( a word NOT in their dictionary

      • Kangoocar says:

        Get lost Betty!!!!

        • BETTTYTRUMP says:

Get lost blindfaithfulness Paid blogger OBA Kangaroocar. ……..really…..I am having a real laugh at your high level of hypocrisy. …

          • Northshore says:

I can`t believe Betty you are saying to someone else “Paid blogger”

          • jt says:

            Betty…respond to Ringmaster above.
            Thank you.

  20. hmmmm says:

My question is this? Can someone come to Bermuda and live in Bermuda before the work permit has been given a yes or no by Immigration.

    • erm says:

      Exactly!

    • Sickofantz says:

      No

    • It's WORST THEN THAT says:

Yes under the OBA policy if any company, construction business or restaurant business drops off a work permit application to Immigration. Before the application is even been given approval for a YES/NO ……..or look at by the Immigration Board the applicant can fly and live in Bermuda. Simply put the OBA government is saying come into Bermuda and live here while the application is in process. We have not gave you approval on the application but you know the jobs yours. WTF

So what does that tell the Bermudian who’s also competing for the same job?

IT TELLS THEM YOU ARE CRAP OUT OF LUCK THAT PERSON IS HERE AND AT THE END OF THE DAY THAT’S WHO THE COMPANY WANTS!!!!

      • Onion says:

And then when that work permit is denied because there’s a qualified Bermudian then they are free to leave when their holiday is over.

      • reefs says:

        “It’s WORST THEN THAT says:”

There is nothing ‘WORST’ than a Bermudian who doesn’t have a basic grasp of English spelling or grammar whining about a job applicant who does.

      • serengeti says:

Pretty much everything you said in your post is a bunch of lying crap.

    • X Oba Supporter says:

If this is true it’s a slap in the face to every Bermudian. A work permit holder should not enter the country until given approval. What does the Fahy think… that the employee is just going to sit around Bermuda waiting for 8 weeks to be told it wasn’t approved. Their going to work because in the end people move here to make more money.

  21. swing voter says:

a few dozen do not speak for the entire population

  22. Toughchit says:

No different than France’s National Front, Greece’s Golden Dawn, Britain’s UKIP or EDL or the US’ Tea Party movement.

Different countries, but the same hate.

    • Upon Fairchild says:

Yes, I agree. These protests are racist, nationalistic and hateful. I personally welcome open borders.

  23. Soooo says:

I’m totally confused,…. Walton is rambling on about 50 years…. Exactly when did his party leave power? The man has no idea at all!!!

  24. RM says:

Less than thirty people turned up if you exclude journalists: comical!

  25. Coffee says:

Makes me wonder why places like India , China , the Philippines ,Jamaica , Canada , England , Russia and the United States of America don’t have serious immigration problems ?

  26. Dave H says:

Brain dead morons! Got nothing to do with policy – just hate and jealousy. When they smuggled 4 detainees in during the middle of the night where this lot? Can you imagine if the oba did that – can you imagine Sen. Fahy saying oh by the way we have smuggled some people into bermuda. Can you imagine??? They really have become pathetic.

  27. redbeard says:

wow. so the PLP have finally admitted defeat. They no longer have the intellect required to beat a bill in either house, they didnt even give their senetars a chance to try, instead they shut down the house by bringing in rent a rabble to sing “we shall not be moved” the PLP forefathers must be turning in their graves.

  28. Ringmaster says:

It was the PLP who created the PRC, and rightfully so. The PLP also, maybe without knowing it, created the opportunity for certain PRC to obtain status. What are they complaining about now? How many PLP Ministers, Senators and others married non Bermudians? The hypocrisy smells like sulphur, to coin a phrase use by Marc Bean.

    • Unbelievable says:

The PLP will never EVER look inwards at their own defiencies. Never.

  29. ha says:

If they want to support something, Go up National Stadium and support out boys on the field!

  30. grass roots bermudian( alice) says:

It is about time the persons of this country who are mostly oppressed FINALLY stand up!! I have had enough of too many foreigners coming to this tiny island with the thought and behaviour: I am better than you are. Enough of this snottiness! Allow no more of this foolishness to prevail. We will stand up AND be heard!!Observe them closely! They behave as though they are entitled and empowered. ENOUGH!!!!

    • WB says:

get a dose of reality. We Bermudians are the very ones you speak of arrogant, better than thou, hypocritical a*s*** I apologize for being a #$%^ Bewremudian the world OWES US. Don’t think so!!!!!!!!!

    • Noncents says:

Quiet Alice. The rest of us are trying to progress and make this island better. Enough of your xenophobia. Its tired and you are a joke.

Its encouraging to see the bulk of the small crowd are in their twilight years. The future of Bermuda doesn’t buy this cr@p.

      Sarcasm?

    • hmmm says:

      Huh, snottiness?

Go read your post…now there is snottiness in abundancce.

Where have you encountered snotty foreigners ?

    • Bermy says:

Lol, sure it doesn’t bother you when your getting your overpriced coffee and snack at buzz.

    • zikkii says:

If the pigs that originally occupied this island protested against humans that first came to this island, this would not be happening. What am I saying, we all came from somewhere, so we got to treat one another with respect and in ahumanly manner. Not this barking towards other nationalities.

    • Unbelievable says:

No foreigner comes to Bermuda with the intent to take a job from any Bermudian. If Bermudians didn’t stroll around the place acting they deserve the universe just because they are Bermudian, maybe they wouldn’t be so uppity with you.

      • Danny says:

hmmmmm …a little harsh. I think we may want to consider the policy being forward by the English FA to restrict the number of foreign players in their leagues. Their rationale is based on developing English talent. Nah, surely the English wouldn’t support that.

        • Unbelievable says:

It’s not harsh. It’s reality. There many reasons why people come to Bermuda to work and none of those reasons is anyone’s business. There are foreigners who come here and do their ex-pat thing and then there are those who get in and contribute.

Either way, we can’t be telling these people to “go home”. That’s ridiculous.

    • Sorry Sir says:

Fact: Most foreigners are on contract, not PRC.
Fact: Giving PRC holders status will not change the amount of jobs available to Bermudians.
Fact: The PLP gave status to more foreigners than the OBA has or will even in the event of giving said PRC’s status.
Fact: You’re scared that these PRC holders will be allowed to vote as they would most likely vote for the government who gave them status, just like hundreds who obtained status under the PLP did a decade back.

  31. Rasta says:

Let people into Bermuda. We Bermudians need jobs!

    • Worked out says:

Well as a Bermudian why do we put up with the S*(^^& attitudes that we Bermudians display in the work force. Timekeeping, absenteeism, lack of dedication to our employer, work at my pace, you owe me this job, a general s*t A7s attitude.Dont tell me I HAVE BEEN IN THE WORK FORCE OVER 35 YEARS ON BOTH sides as employer and employee. Our work ethics SUCK compared to those in other countries. Oh I aint going to work tomorrow my sisters cousins uncles brother is sick so I cant come in but I won’t bother to tell you till after I dont show up, despite the fact your busy.

    • Berner says:

Agreed, open up the borders, let IB in, they will promote employment, not take it.

Surely we have worked that out by now?

Or is the answer in tourism? In February?

  32. Doc says:

It seems like you all want the black bermudians gone

Stop listening to poorly educated folks who have not even finished school with their lofty opinions.
    Think BUSINESS…lets get the BUSINESS!!!!!!

    • Danny says:

Please stop with the lectures. There are 2 Bermuda’s and as such we just see things from different angles. Stop with the not so subtle code words!!

      • Triangle Drifter says:

Rwead it a few times looking for code words. What are those cose words & what do they mean please.

        Not expecting any answer.

        • Come Correct says:

Business – Stuff grassroots Bermudians dont feel they qualify for so eff that anti-grassroots stuff…lol

Seriously, do I have to tell you where to pick up your plp code word handbook from?….Alaska hall silly girl. Its $2billions dollars per copy. Everybody from Latrine Sherbert to Dichael Munkley has one.

  36. ohno says:

  37. Coffee says:

In this regard the OBA is absolutely bilious !

    • Raymond Ray says:

Before I say good night I want to share a letter written by a “friend”.
“The writing has been on the wall ever since the O.B.A. won the Government. It would not matter how much so called “collaboration” had taken / takes place. It is obvious that there is some sort of a plan that even the more level headed members of the P.L.P have signed onto. Whatever it is, it bodes ill for Bermuda’s future, for this sort of behaviour is adolescent; very short sighted and demonstrates a determination not to cooperate – not to understand the realities of Bermuda’s economy and debt burden. No one can say that P.L.P Leader Marc Bean didn’t come right out and say what he plans to do. He said that his job was “to bring down the government”. He never mentioned collaborate or cooperate. He wants to rule and it looks as though MP Walton Brown is right on board.”
Now I ask you, what do you think?

  38. Danny says:

There’s no getting around it, they have already reminded the swing voter that politicians are the same the world over.
The PLP were voted out because of the bad economy yet one can say that no progress has been made in 2 years under the OBA.
    >The SWING voters were losing their jobs—however unemployment has gotten worse in the last 2 years
    > Voters were losing houses and still are yet new OBA legislation will allow PRC’s a better opportunity to purchase a house OR 2 should they want. Make no mistake, this is how it will be viewed / compared
    >Bermudians are losing more jobs, however the opportunity for PRC’s to work will improve. To the 2,000 + Bermudians out of work this will be almost impossible to accept
    > OBA supported lawyers and accountants will continue to point to new company incorporations , yet they won’t provide information of who it really benefits. No need, Lawyers, Accounting firms and banks. I could be wrong but we have yet to see jobs from these new companies.
    >The PLP over-stocked the Civil Service and we all know that there needs to be a culling, but we have not seen a solution from the OBA. Surely they can start with the immigrant workers first and trim some of the fat
    >The PLP were voted out because of perceived corruption and insider trading, yet within months of assuming power we were hit with Jet-Gate; their Chairman resigns after being frustrated in his attempts to arrive at the truth and we have yet to receive an independent conclusion. Sounds like the GOB that we voted out
    >We have yet to get to the bottom of how a Chairman of a local construction company also happens to be a Board member of the Construction Company that receives the contract (NO BID Process) for the proposed new airport AND why a prominent Minister attempts to convince us that he doesn’t know of this man. Keep in mind that this local company have done 100′s of millions dollars of work in Bermuda to include a few government projects ( school or two, I believe). Help me here, where is the transparency? Where is the fair play that we expected in our new government? The government that so eloquently convinced us that they were honest brokers?
    >Help me to understand why we should continue to believe that this new government is different from those we threw out. Isn’t this the same group that PROMISED us a referendum on Gambling if they were voted in? Confused? No need to be, just tick the YES box. What happened? The balloons from their victory bash still hadn’t deflated before they rushed forward with Gaming in Bermuda and I guess that there will never be a referendum. Ok–business as usual
    > No bid award to a construction company to build the Village for the AC 35. Yes I know, the company formed to handle this is not bound by government policies. Really!! Are you having a laugh? Based on our concerns with how the previous government handled the bidding process (that said, bids were required for all contracts exceeding $50k) didn’t we expect better from the OBA. I stand to be corrected but isn’t the money allocated for this coming from government coffers?

By now I assume that you get the point, we haven’t seen a discernible difference and that my friends doesn’t bode well for the OBA in the next election. Like it or not, the swing voter decides the end result and based on the above I’m guessing that they will lean left of center the next time around.

There is so much discontent and pain in many homes in this country as evidenced again this evening. Make no mistake, this is a real concern!

  39. The Truth and Nothing but the Truth !! says:

Her table does not look busy at all, I wonder why? Own up sign lady, your PLP,BIU,PC,BTUC,BPSU, HAVE ALL FAILED THIS COUNTRY ! And continue to do so !!!!! There is only one way to fix Bermuda and that fix is the OBA !!!!!!

  40. C James says:

This is how many ‘frustrated grassroots Bermudians’ they can get to protest when it is NOT raining.

My best laugh of the month.

    PATHETIC.

  41. Sorry Sir says:

Wake up people. This is not about immigration. This is about VOTES.

Nothing will change, just that these people would be allowed to vote and that’s what they’re scared of. They can dress it up all they like, but it’s about votes.

  42. cromwell says:

The closed immigration policy of the last 100 years has failed to keep non Bermudians off the island. Its time for open borders like whats going on in the US by President Obama.

As for the PLP takeover of the Senate what a joke its just a empty room with empty conversation that has already decided by the OBA and the PLP. This protest was obviously not a bipartisan, collaborative dialogue on immigration reform. It was not just a mob but a well executed stratagem by the PLP leadership element of Dr. Brown supporters of him and his methods that he learned in the US and used since his student days.

This issue is to create conflict between Bermudians for the sake of outsiders to destabilize government structures to bring about Independence through organized protest instead of the democratic institutions Bermuda has inherited. Its a common method used to overthrow governments all around the world and institute dictators.

The leaders you see and hear are radicals indeed and have no respect whatsoever and are not interested in dialogue about immigration.

These are the new leaders of the PLP who have lost the majority of seats in the House of Assembly through a democratic election they reject. They reject as a collaborator even their own Speaker Rand Horton of the House who is a member of the PLP.

This faction of the PLP is trying to consolidate and motivate their support base by organizing street protest.

The OBA looks at them as sore losers. Business looks at them as a mob.
Future dictators look at them as an opportunity.

Revolution in Bermuda may take you to somewhere you dont want to be.

  43. PANGAEA says:

” They have no bread”. So ! Let them eat cake “.

  44. Huh says:

    PLP = Tea Party

  45. PANGAEA says:

The worst policy any country can do is, borrow money because then the money lender owns you, you will never be free.

If you think that the money lender will write of your debt, think again ,it will not happen , now you owe your souls to the company store.

Eg you buy a house and borrow $1.4 M at the end of 15 years the house cost you $2.8 M.

  46. Mark says:

What a bunch of numpties. Cutting off their noses to spite their faces!

  47. Andy Neilson says:

One person’s idea of “people power” is another’s idea of “ruling by the mob”.

  48. mai says:

I’m sorry. I’m not into politics. But I can’t run away from what’s happening in this country today. OBA AND PLP both look like a bunch of power hungry turds, both fighting against each other CONSTANTLY! The OBA is in power right now, why won’t the plp just drop this stupid feud and support the party to help Bermuda get to a better state. Bermuda is too small for all this mess! According to the PLP, the OBA can’t do anything right so they cause drama (and I’m sure the oba used to do the same) but it doesn’t do anything but rips the country apart. I think to myself, why do they (oba and plp) do this? It’s all about power, money and the feeling of entitlement. It’s not about the people. It’s never been about the people. Smh…

  49. Easter says:

    The oba sucks eggs.
