Photos: Alma College Alumnae Hold Reunion

April 30, 2015

Twenty-three alumnae from the former Alma College of St. Thomas, Ontario are currently on the island in order to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Alma College Class of 1955.

Alma College was an all-girls collegiate boarding school which was popular with Bermudians, from the time of the first Bermudian student entering in 1943 until the school closed in 1988. Approximately 66 Bermudian girls attended the school during that period.

One visiting Canadian Alumnae is Mrs. Evelyn Smith Knight, who attended Alma College 70 years ago and says she treasures her friendship with Bermuda alumnae the late Ms. Carol Hill. Recently, several Bermudians who attended Alma College joined the Canadian visitors at a cocktail reception at the Grotto Bay Resort.

These attendees included those for whom strong friendships that started at Alma have endured over the years.

Mrs. June Clarke Caisey of Bermuda and Mrs. Sandra Irvine Pearson of Ontario met at Alma in 1954 and, for 61 years, have maintained that friendship and still share fond memories of their Alma days together.

Mrs. Lauren Jones King of Bermuda and Mrs. MaryBeth Beacock Beere were roommates at the school during 1967 and 1968. Their friendship was one that was well respected throughout Alma College at the time, and they reportedly served as excellent role models for the Bermudian and Canadian students alike.

Mrs. Cheryl-Ann Simmons Griffin of Bermuda and Mrs. Patricia Coutts Kirby of Burlington, Ontario have maintained close ties ever since their days as roommates at Alma in 1967. Mrs. Kirby, an artist, and her husband are frequent visitors to the island and consider Bermuda their second home.

This reunion year is particularly special as Mrs. Kirby has the honour of presenting her art at the Bermuda Society of Arts at City Hall during the month of May. She will exhibit paintings of places in Bermuda which have impressed her over the years.

It was good to join the Alma College activities. I attended Alma in the late seventies. An excellent school. Offers a quality and ‘all rounded’ educational experience.

Appreciate my parents investing in Alma College

Thoroughly enjoyed my latest visit to Bermuda with the Alma girls and was thrilled to be reunited with a friend I had not seen in 44 years. Although the school is gone she lives on in those of us who remember. Thank you to Bermuda for making our visit an outstanding one. The island’s wonderful people who are so friendly and helpful made that possible and we all took home happy memories of our time in this lovely and magical place.
