Man In Critical Condition In ICU After Collision

[Updated: A 42 year old man is in critical condition in the ICU following a collision on Middle Road in Southampton which resulted in the vehicle overturning and the driver having to be assisted out. The two passengers -- a 34 year old woman and a 7 year old boy -- have sustained what the police said were non-life threatening injuries.]

Emergency services responded to Middle Road in Southampton at approximately 1.00pm today [July 12] following a collision which appears to have resulted in at least one person being trapped in an overturned vehicle.

Bermuda Fire and Rescue personnel cared for the injured person[s] until an ambulance arrived and transported the person[s] to the hospital for treatment. Further details are limited at this time, however we will update as able.

Update 2.51pm: A police spokesperson said, “Traffic is currently being diverted at the junction of Middle Road and Lighthouse Road as well as Middle Road and Church Road in Southampton,following a reported serious single vehicle collision that occurred around 1pm today in the vicinity of Jews Bay.

“Motorists are advised to take alternate routes until further notice. Details regarding the collision are limited at this time;‎ however the driver of the car involved has been taken to the hospital via ambulance for treatment.

“The extent of his injuries is unknown. An update on the incident will be provided when more details are available.”

Update 4.18pm: A police spokesperson said, “The section of Middle Road, Southampton between Church Road and Lighthouse Road temporarily closed following a reported serious collision that occurred around 1pm has now been re-opened to normal traffic flow.”

Update 4.46pm: The police confirm the driver, a 42 year old man, is in ICU, and the two passengers — a 34 year old woman and a 7 year old boy — are said to have sustained non-life threatening injuries.”

A police spokesperson said, “Around 1pm on Sunday, July 12th first responders were dispatched to a reported serious single vehicle collision along Middle Road, Southampton in the vicinity of Jews Bay.

“It appears that the car involved overturned injuring the driver, a 42 year old Devonshire man and his two passengers, believed to be a 34 year old woman and a 7 year old boy.

“Apparently the driver had to be assisted out of the vehicle and was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment of a head injury.

“At last check he had been admitted into the Intensive Care Unit. The two passengers are said to have sustained non-life threatening injuries.

“A section of Middle Road, Southampton between Church Road and Lighthouse Road was temporarily closed while a Traffic Collision Investigator and the Forensic Support Unit examined the scene. That section of road has since been re-opened to normal traffic flow.

“Inquiries regarding this collision are underway and any witnesses should contact the main police telephone number 295-0011.”

Update 8.03pm: A police spokesperson said, “At last check 7:40pm Sunday July 12th 2015, the 42 year old male driver injured in a reported serious single vehicle collision that occurred around 1pm along Middle Road, Southampton in the vicinity of Jews Bay was in critical condition at the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.”

Update 11.44pm: The BFRS said, “At approximately 1:02 pm on Sunday, July 12, 2015, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to a report of a car overturned on Middle Road, Southampton near Jew’s Bay.”

Fire Service spokesperson Sergeant Russann Francis stated that “a single vehicle travelling with a family of three was reported to have overturned”. The Fire Service responded to the incident with a crew of four personnel to find one male trapped in the vehicle. Fire personnel used the “Jaws of Life” tools to extricate the gentleman to safety.

“All three persons were assessed by BFRS personnel before being transferred to KEMH via ambulance.”
