Bermuda Inspired Restaurant In New Hampshire

April 7, 2016

A restaurant in Tilton, New Hampshire features a decidedly Bermudian theme, from its name — ‘Onions’ — to its menu, which features island fare such as Bermuda Onion Soup and Bermuda Fish Chowder laced with sherry peppers and Goslings Black Rum.

According to their website, the Tilton Inn and Onions Pub & Restaurant is owned and operated by Kathy and Allan Powell, formerly of the town of St. George in Bermuda, where they once owned and operated Wharf Tavern and Freddies Pub.

In their video, Haley Powell, the owners’ daughter, says, “The Tilton Inn was built in 1886; they say that it has burned down three times in the past, all within a span of 100 years. Ghost hunters have come in and have determined that it is actually haunted.

“At the end we have 10 rooms on the second floor; we also have three apartments on the third floor. On the walls in the dining room specifically, we’ve got a lot of different paintings that my grandmother has actually made.

“We got the name ‘Onions’ based on the fact that Bermudians are considered onions. We’ve also incorporated many dishes from the Island within our menu. We’ve also got a British flair in there as well.”

    I love this!

I have a question pertaining to getting authentic Bermudian food locally……

Where can I direct visitors to get real Bermudian food that can be accessed by bus or is located the city of Hamilton?

We have plenty of Italian eateries, pizza places, Irish and English style pubs, places where you can get a good sandwich or a panini but how about somewhere that has fish cakes, cassava pie, peas and rice, baked mac and cheese, Spanish rice, fish and conch chowder, conch fritters, beef, mussel and chicken pies, Johnny bread, bread and butter custard, fish sandwiches, mussels, local fish, lobster (when it’s in season) etc. plus serving authentic afternoon tea ALL IN ONE PLACE.

Can someone work on that if there isn’t already such a place. Please use all things Bermuda like our bananas (for breads, pancakes and deserts) loquats (for jams and sorbet) and sea foods (for chowders, bisques etc.) Try to stay open throughout the day…..many restaurants close around 2:30pm and open back up at 6pm visitors just start thinking about lunch at 1:30/2pm.

I work with our visitors and they always ask where they can eat our food but most of our traditional foods are eaten at home. When we go out we eat food that they can easily get at home. I had one man tell me he can get fettuccini and pizza at home….. He wanted our food.

Primes Place- at 25 Victoria Street, Hamilton HM 10, Bermuda.

Spotlight Cafe near BELCO has a lot of the things you listed. I would also suggest taking them to Art Mel’s for a fish sandwich. You can get good pies at Steven’s Lunch Wagon behind Corp of Hamilton or the Pie Factory on Parliament Street. There are lots of gems in St. George’s where I am sure there are probably some traditionally Bermudian dishes. Being Bermudian I don’t look for those types of foods when I eat out. Like you said, we get those foods at home. Hopefully someone else can add to these suggestions.

All excellent suggestions BUT these are visitors and although we are small some of those places are not easy to find or get to independently. If you try to take the bus or ride a scooter to some these places it’s almost like you need a personal guide.

Taxis are expensive and unless you get a very fair, not so busy driver, moving around the island for a lot of visitors is very hard.

Specialty is a great suggestion but here’s the rub……if you are in Flatts and want to take the bus to Specialty, as close as it is, you have to go through a lot just to go over the hill.

Most of the feed back I get is that Bermuda is very beautiful and the people here are very friendly BUT it’s quite a challenge to get around.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions now if we could get a more realistic map of the island I’ll do my best to point out some of the places you all recommended.
