Almost $5M Spent On Investigation Into Dr Brown

July 15, 2019

Almost $5 million has been spent so far on the investigation into former Premier Dr Ewart Brown, Members of Parliament heard on Friday.

The expenditure was stated in the House of Assembly by Minister of National Security Wayne Caines, who was responding to questions from Derrick Burgess, which were read out by MP Michael Scott.

Minister Caines explained that over $4.68 million has been spent on “man hours in Bermuda and overseas,” $64,345 on “airline and ground transportation,” and $80,000 on “accommodation in Bermuda and overseas.”

There was a second question due to be answered on the legal costs and legal fees, however the allotted time for questions ran out before the Minister could reply, so those replies have been deferred to next week.

Audio excerpt of the questions from the House of Assembly:

The investigation into Dr Brown has been ongoing for years, and the former Premier previously spoke about the expenditure on it, saying that they have spent millions to “investigate one man while murderers and robbers are on the loose and gangs are running rampant” and the “Commissioner of Police owes the taxpayers some answers.”

Well of course the former Premier would like the police to do something else. I suspect every subject of a criminal investigation would feel the same.

Well being that Trevor Moniz was so gung ho on this case, let him use his own funds instead of tax payers.

      • Joe Bloggs says:

Sorry OJ, wrong subject. This article is about the Bermuda Police Service’s criminal investigation. It is not about the civil action in the US.

      • Toodle-oo says:

Why should he ? The investigation was instigated by the police (not the OBA) well before 2012. Will you ever get it ?

      • BB says:

That’s a good idea OJ…and you’re team can pay for the appeal to the Privy Council to remove some rights from some Born Bermudians.

  3. Real Deal says:

2 Bermudas . They spend 5M yet police tell me that 6k+ worth of brand new goods stolen is not enough for them to do DNA test on cloths left by burglars at the burglar crime scene.

Do the DNA text and I can get my stuff back simple.

Makes me wonder… if it was someone else, would the DNA Testing be done?
you don’t build trust this way. I really dont feel like police have my back.

Neither do the PLP protesters who were pepper sprayed during a peaceful protest. That’s they were paid thousands of dollars. Perhaps you should ask Government for your reparations now.

  4. OMG says:

Do you honestly think the new Commissioner of Police would allow a case to continue if they didn’t have anything substantial on Dr B. You can be sure that his case will go all the way to DPP’ s chambers once all the t’s have been crossed.

  5. La Verdad says:

I really don’t understand why an investigation would take this long.

  6. Y-Gurl says:

Despite all the obvious less than transparent acts, Uigers, ferries, ICS, leaked memos, construction, hospital, mass business buying, nothing can be done, nothing can be proven so why are they still wasting money, bring in the FBI for a once and for all investigation, the BPS have been bungling this matter for years
