2019 GEW Celebrations Set For November

October 28, 2019

The Bermuda Economic Development Corporation [BEDC], in partnership with the Department of ICT Policy and Innovation and Youth Entrepreneurship Initiative, are gearing up for the 2019 Global Entrepreneurship Week [GEW] celebrations, which will be taking place during the month of November.

A spokesperson said, “GEW is celebrated worldwide from November 18-24, but as always, Bermuda has a month-long calendar filled with exciting and inspiring events.

“GEW was launched in 2008 and has grown to include over 170 host countries and 50,000 partner organizations, with activities planned throughout the world. Bermuda has participated in GEW since the start and has been recognized globally at the Global Entrepreneurship Congress for hosting the most events per capita – and this year there will be plenty on offer to get involved in.”

“The month-long celebration of entrepreneurship will kick off on Friday, November 1 with a public overview of GEW to be broadcast on all GEW social media and web outlets. On the same evening, the public is encouraged to participate in an exciting scavenger hunt that will allow new and existing entrepreneurs to work together to identify some of the small business landmarks on the island.

“Prizes and fun to be had for all that sign up.

“On Saturday, November 2, the public is invited to celebrate and support local entrepreneurs and industry experts at Cocktails with Creatives at the Birdcage starting at 4.00pm. This event promises to be a fun and informative one and all are invited to come out to learn more about the entrepreneurial opportunities lined up for the month of November.

“There will be entertainment, food and locally made products to discover during the different kind of networking event.

“One of the more exciting new opportunities this year includes the partnership with Driven Society to bring some of the hottest influencers from the US to Bermuda. Join us at Fairmont Southampton for Inspire Bermuda Weekend starting on Friday, November 8th with a Vendor and Art Market showcasing top Bermuda talent.

“On Saturday, November 9, nine panelists, which include international influencer Alex Wolf and co-founder of Blavity, Jonathan Jackson, among others, will be coming to the island to share their insights on how they made it. This is the first event of this kind specifically targeted to up and coming entrepreneurs. To purchase tickets, visit www.bedc.bm.

“Other highlights of the month’s events include the Youth Pitch preliminary presentations taking place on Monday, November 18. This category of the Rocket Pitch Competition will allow Bermuda youth to pitch their ideas for a chance to win a spot to compete in the Rocket Pitch Finals, which will take place on the following Wednesday, November 20 at AXA XL.

“The finals of the Rocket Pitch Competition are always an exciting time with entrepreneurs from five categories, including Pitch Pink, Pitch Town, Pitch Tech, Pitch Green and Youth Pitch battling out to see whose idea will come out on top and take home the $5,000 cash award and a start-up package of services to help them launch their business.

“Applications are being accepted for the competition until November 2nd, so don’t miss out on the chance to win start-up capital for your business.

“In celebration of Women’s Entrepreneurship Day, the Women’s Entrepreneurship Day Conference will be a day-long event featuring marketing and development strategist, Tameka Vasquez, who is AVP of Global Marketing for the high tech and manufacturing division of Genpact along with an esteemed panel of local female entrepreneurs. ‘Pow[Her]‘ at this event will inspire, empower and elevate.

“The third annual Small Business Awards will take place on Saturday, November 23 at Pier 6. The event will celebrate the island’s small businesses and entrepreneurs and the winners of the 2019 Small Business Awards will be revealed. Nominations will be open until Friday, November 1st.”

Jamillah Lodge, Director of Communication & Development for BEDC and GEW Project Manager, said, “We are so excited this year to have so many opportunities lined up to showcase the entrepreneurial spirt of Bermudians. We have seen many entrepreneurs succeed and bring their vision to life, and we want to continue to inspire people to make their business ideas a reality and celebrate those that have already started on their journey.

“We encourage anyone interested in starting their own business, or those who just want to support small businesses and entrepreneurs, to come out and take part in the events put on during the month of November, and beyond.”
