Antonio Myers Charged With Kumi Harford Murder

kumi harford bermuda25 year old Antonio Myers of Rambling Lane, Pembroke was charged with the murder of Kumi Harford in Magistrates Court today [May 31]. Mr Myers was also charged with possession of a firearm.

30 year old Kumi Harford [pictured] was killed around 5am on St. Monica’s Road on December 5th, 2009, when he was hit by multiple bullets while driving home.

His death occurred during a crime wave which saw three men murdered in under two weeks, with the others being Shane Minors and Gary “Fingaz” Cann. Mr Harford’s brother Jakai Harford has also been shot on two occasions; in 2007 and 2010.

Mr Myers, represented by Elizabeth Christopher, was remanded in custody and will reappear in court on June 15. He was not required to enter a plea as the matter will be heard in Supreme Court.

This is the second suspect to be brought up on charges relating to a 2009 shooting in recent weeks, following the charging of Sanchey Grant on April 22 for the November 2009 Southside Cinema shooting.

Police blocked off part of Reid Street, and Mr Meyers was brought in under heavy guard, and quickly whisked away once his brief appearance was over. Crowds of onlookers could be heard yelling support to Mr Myers.

On behalf of the Police Service, Detective Chief Inspector Nicholas Pedro, Officer In Charge of the Serious Crime Unit, released the following statement:

The Bermuda Police Service can confirm that 25 year old Antonio Myers of Pembroke appeared in Hamilton Magistrates Court today (Monday 31st May, 2010), charged with the murder of Kumi Harford.

Members of the public will recall that at 5am on 5th December 2009, Mr. Harford was shot multiple times as he drove in his car on Mission Lane, just off St. Monica’s Road, Pembroke.

Over the last several months, detectives from the Serious Crime Unit have been investigating this, and other murders and shootings. The charges in this case are as a result of significant investigative efforts to bring these gunmen to justice.

As the Bermuda Police Service continues the process of reviewing all of the outstanding murders and shootings, it is anticipated that more persons will appear in court on these types of charges.

Again, it is important to recognize the members of the public that have come forward to lend assistance to the Police in these cases, and also to recognize their resolve, and integrity. The public play an integral role in almost every investigation the Police conduct and we would like to remind the public that crime cannot be solved by the Police alone.
