October 7, 2010

While our tiny island of Bermuda may not sweep many records against the huge nations our athletes face, we have managed to capture one very endearing one; fielding the oldest athlete to compete in the Commonwealth Games.

78-year-old Nelson Simons is competing in shooting, and is the oldest of all the 7,000 plus athletes in Delhi, India.

A true veteran in the sport, Mr Simons previously competed in various other international competitions including the 2006 Commonwealth Games, 2002 Commonwealth Games, and 1989 Malaysia Commonwealth Games.

Bermuda is not the only country with over 70s competing; Scotland’s 72-year-old Willie Wood is competing his eighth consecutive Commonwealth Games in lawn bowling. Also in lawn bowling is 73-year-old Don Batiste representing the Island of Guernsey, and 73-year-old Gerald Reive from the Falkland Islands.
