Police & Eyewitness Report: Teen Girl Robbed

November 7, 2010

armed robbery picAs we initially reported last night, yesterday (Nov 6) a 15-year-old girl was robbed by an armed man yesterday.

The Police have officially confirmed the incident today saying “Around 7:20pm on Saturday, Police responded to a report of a robbery on Par-La-Ville Road in Pembroke. It appears that four young women aged 15 – 16 years old were walking along Par-La-Ville Road near the junction with Rosebank Road when one of them was accosted by an unknown man brandishing what appeared to be a firearm.”

The Police continued on to say that “The suspect demanded the teenager’s BlackBerry cellular phone before fleeing the scene on foot with it heading toward Bermudiana Road. None of the teenagers were injured. The suspect is described as a light brown skinned man, approximately 5’9” tall of medium build wearing a black hooded top and a pair of khaki pants.”

One of the teenagers present said she was walking with her friends “through Par La Ville Road on our way to BAA field to watch some football.”

The 15-year-old said on their way there they were “approached by a yellow skin male that had on a black hoodie, khaki pants, black sneakers, black nolan helmet with dark visors.”

The eyewitness says “He walked towards her with the gun in his right hand and zipped up his hoodie with his left hand. After he zipped up his hoodie he then placed his gun to her head and said give me your phone.”

“He then snatched the phone and he then ran towards the XL building.”

“He then ran across the road and ran towards Albouy’s Point. As me and my bestfriends ran behind him, he then disappeared and then I called the police and waited for them to arrive at KFC to us.”

Police state that inquiries into this incident are underway, and are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with any information to contact the Hamilton Criminal Investigation Unit on 295-0011 or the independent confidential Crime Stoppers Bermuda hotline on 800-8477.

  2. insiDe man says:

    This is horrible.

A lot of people think that we should ban hoodies. In this particular case a helmet with a dark visor was used to hide the face, and the hoodie only to hide the body. Should wearing a helmet at night, when away from your vehicle, be banned too..

    “Princess Street”…..Albouy’s Point……damn………………………

  4. BermyGurl says:

Anyone else find this story a little on the weird side?

    • observer says:

      Yeah. The awfulness aside, even.

    • Unbelievable says:

I agree. They ran after him knowing he had a gun? Not only that, he ran away…you mean he didn’t have a get-away-bike? Did anybody else see this running pursuit around town? I’m sorry, I know things have gotten bad in Bermuda, but this story is definitely on the weird side.

  5. Uncle Ben says:

I can’t believe you are describing the man as a ‘light brown skinned man, approximately 5’9”’. This is so racist – it makes it automatically sound as if the person is black. Its racism everywhere you look nowadays.

    • Missy says:

Of course he’s Black; I’m pretty sure you we all know what a light brown person looks like and a dark brown person looks like. How else you expect them to describe the man? Would you like it if the said DESERT SAND and then we would find him in a box of CRAYOLA’s. So stop with the whole racism thing, you went looking for it. Take a break and you stop being a racist and you will see life is not that complicated. The statement was describing a person, if you find a better way to describe cold hearted criminals without offending them, let’s hear it! Criminals need to have no say in what they wish to be discribed as!

    • The One On Gorham Road says:

@Uncle Ben – even if they only had his height, I think race would be a fairly safe assumption :)

      • Unbelievable says:

        That was rude.

      • insiDe man says:

I have only ever been robbed by whites.

“98% of all crimes committed against whites are committed by whites… 98% of all crimes committed against blacks are committed by blacks.”

        reference: Yale Sociology

    • *** says:

how else do you want someone to describe them – its not being rasist!! its called giving a description!!!

  6. Uncle Ben says:

I should have made it more clear that what I wrote above was meant to be a joke. It is called COMEDY! Uncle Ben is not racist – just fed up with people who make everything into a race issue. Bermuda needs to grow up and stop seeing everything in black & white. My apologies to anyone who thought I was being serious.

  7. Truth is killin' me says:

Uncle Ben was looking for a reaction and you all bit it like a chub. Hook, line and sinker!

  8. MCFC says:

There is something wrong on this Island when a man can rob a teenage girl for a phone, threatening her life, in the middle of Hamilton in the early evening. Criminals obviously have no fear of the police catching them. I would feel safer walking around Manhattan. Seriously though, the government and the police failed to nip this is the but 2 years ago, now guns in Bermuda are common place. We have a violent, anti-social, greedy and uneductated young generation coming up. This place will crime ridden Island in 5-10 years. We ignored eductaion and led the Island based on greed the last 12 years, when is that going to change??

  9. Concerned says:

So a 15 yr old girl is robbed and the biggest concern from readers is her choice of words for the suspects description. Great use of time, really made a difference in my day! (That is sarcasm in case it’s not clear)
Seriously though, as far as I can remember, someone installed CCTV cameras at nearly every street junction in Hamilton. If what the girl said is true, wouldn’t we be able to follow where he came from and vanished? On a side note it’s a cellphone, probably a BB. I can track mine using it’s GPS and network coverage for free. I’m sure it’s possible for her carrier to trace it. Worst case scenario: she gets her phone with no case. Best scenario: he still has it in his pocket/hideout.
Things like this happen a lot in bigger cities and people get away with it. To put it to scale, Hamilton is more of a town than a city. When was the last time you heard about someone doing this in a town and not getting caught? I think instead of being concerned about the ethnicity of criminals we should be focusing more on the prevention of crime. I’m not suggesting more surveillance but maybe just a better use of what we have already.

    • insiDe man says:

It is not hard for the providers to track the criminal. These phones have Electronic Serial Numbers, the phone itself is useless. Anyone that uses it or puts their SIM card in it can be caught quite easily. It is now a paperweight.

It was a foolish crime to commit and a horrible experience for this young girl and her friends to go through. I am very proud of them for being brave enough to report it.

    • Dee says:

This was certainly a brazen attack, there must have been people around especially dining outside at Portofino. Looks like the robber had no fear at all.

  10. Brasco says:

Opperation Clean Sweep is needed again A.S.A.P.!!!!!!!!!!……but Police aren’t interested….too busy going over the traffic warrant list….and the Judicial system is to busy trying to reform consistent repeat offenders…..broken record

  11. terry says:

Yoo lutt smoking too much inside de brasco……

Your either stirring sh&t ot have no clue.

  12. Uncle Ben says:

But was the Blacberry phone a Black one or a White one? People who see everything this way will want to know. There could be a race issue here.
