Police: Consider ‘Sleeping Over’ on New Years

December 30, 2010

2011Bermuda Police Superintendent James Howard today [Dec 30] advised the Bermuda public that if they are going to enjoy some “toddies” when they celebrate this New Year’s holiday, they should also consider ‘sleeping over’ at a friends house, making sure they have a designated driver to get them home, or plan to use CADA’s ‘get you home’ program.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Martin Weekes said that supported by the Police Reserves, over the full holiday, the Bermuda Police Service would be out in full strength and would be following an active program so as to deter and catch persons who choose to drive whilst impaired.

Mr Weekes also said that the Police would be covering all holiday events that attracted large crowds, and would be monitoring crowd at all major sporting activities. He said that the Police would work closely with the Bermuda Football Association [BFA] in monitoring spectator crowds at their planned matches. Mr Weekes said that the BFA did the risk assessments on games and the Police worked closely with the BFA in this matter.

Update 2:15pm: Full Statement follows below:

ACOP (acting) Martin Weekes, Supt James Howard:

This year we are pleased to report that the Christmas period passed with few incidents of violence and we wish to thank the public for their support. The Bermuda Police service, assisted by the Bermuda Reserve Police, deployed extra Crime Prevention patrols throughout the long holiday weekend and whilst there were some incidents of public order they were swiftly and robustly dealt with. Significant attention was also focused on Bermudas roads during the Christmas weekend to Make Bermuda Safer. A total of eleven persons were arrested on suspicion of Impaired Driving during the period.

Going forward into the New Year the BPS wishes to advise the public that we, again supported by the Bermuda Reserve Police, will continue to show a strong, highly visible police presence throughout the long New Years weekend with particular attention to the New Years festivities on Friday Night and the football games around the island.

Our officers will maintain a strong police presence to deter offenders from spoiling the festivities and will respond very quickly to any emergency. We urge the public to please do your part to by letting us know if you see offences being committed or any other suspicious activity.
