Wednesday Night Racing Season Ends

September 15, 2011

The season came to an end yesterday [Sept.14] after 20 Wednesday nights of yacht racing in the Harbour and Great Sound, with a race featuring crews and boats decked out in fancy dress. Despite the threat of TS Maria, 23 boats turned out in the rain for a great evening’s sail, followed by the final prize-giving at the Dinghy Club.

After 20 races for the 54 boats taking part, 8 different boat designs made up the top 10 after the handicaps were applied, and the six fleets were represented in the top 12.

A statement said, “Thanks to RHADC for hosting the event; the numerous volunteers helping with the racing, scoring, and fun; our sponsors Bacardi and Harley’s Restaurant for their continued support; and finally the J/24 Class who have paid for and run this event for the last 13 years. The J/24 Class is handing over the organising of the event to the new Bermuda Yacht Racing Association (BYRA) who intend to keep the format and continue the tradition as established by the J24’s, still the largest participant in the racing, as “Racing for sailors, by sailors”.

“The winner of the fancy dress competition had their boat dressed as the Black Pearl, with tattered sails and a motley crew – Nasty Medicine.

“The mid-fleet prize is the major prize for the event in most sailors eyes – it rewards participation over skill and a “top boat”. Former Olympians, National Champions, and Professional sailors have all failed in their efforts to attain this prize. Congratulations to Cyclone as the overall mid-fleet winners for 2011.

Plans for 2012 are underway – a skippers meeting is scheduled for Wednesday April 4th at RHADC, with racing getting underway the following week.”
