‘Rudolph’ Film Wins TV Ratings By A Nose
A Bermuda filmmaker’s evergreen Christmas special chased off a herd of scantily clad supermodels to win the top spot in US TV ratings on Tuesday [Nov. 29].
The 39th CBS broadcast of Bermudian Arthur Rankin Jr.’s “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” clocked nearly 13 million American television viewers — a four percent improvement on last year’s figures.
“Rudolph” was so strong it actually attracted more than three million more viewers than a new CBS special aired the same night — “The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show.”
“The Victoria’s Secret” show drew just 10.4 million viewers — but that was an increase over last year’s disappointing nine million viewers.
First aired on NBC in 1964, “Rudolph” — produced by Mr. Rankin and American partner Jules Bass — remains the highest rated, longest-running special in the entire history of American network television.
