Man Pleads Guilty To Wounding His Ex-Girlfriend

June 18, 2013

In Magistrates Court this morning [June 18] a 34-year-old man admitted wounding his ex-girlfriend, but denied additional charges which alleged he threatened to cut her head off.

Michael E. Douglas pleaded guilty to unlawfully wounding his ex-girlfriend on June 14. Douglas then pleaded not guilty to other charges including uttering threatening word and stealing a cellphone.

All the incidents were alleged to have happened at her residence in Southampton.

Prosecutor Nicole Smith told Senior Magistrate Archie Warner that after Douglas had been asked to leave the residence, he chased the woman into her bedroom, punched her several times, and banged her head into a wall causing her to bleed.

The woman’s friends came to her assistance and, in turn, they were threatened. Police and EMT’s were called and attended. The woman was taken to KEMH where she received medical attention for her injuries. Police found and arrested Douglas shortly after the incident.

Magistrate Warner was told that Douglas had told his ex: “As long as you live in Bermuda. I can find you and cut your head off.” He also heard that Douglas had allegedly said: “If you don’t leave the Island I will kill you and your friends.”

Speaking to the Magistrate, Douglas explained that he had asked his ex-girlfriend to hold $500 for him and that when he asked her for the money, she “got an attitude.” Douglas said that he had been in custody since Friday and that he had had lots of time to think things over. He told the Magistrate: “I wish I had done it different.”

Magistrate Warner set trial on the not guilty pleas in July, set a sentencing date for the conviction on the one guilty plea for August, ordered a Social Inquiry Report, and remanded Douglas into custody.

Very true, but also it has to be asked what is wrong with some of these young women. I seen women who knows guys who have treated their past girlfriends badly, who have got other women pregnant then have nothing else to do with her or the baby yet still want to be with the guy. The standards needs to be risen to prevent the amount of sad cases we have being posted in our media & making their way in front of our courts.

The younger generations need guidance & I believe we need to get back to our old values where the older generations set the example. Where the whole neighborhood looked out to be sure the younger generation is getting the necessary guidance to become a productive element in our community. Too much power has been given to those who know no better as those who do are forced to stand on the sidelines & shake their heads in shame.
