Bermuda Cancer & Health: Centre Of Excellence

Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre  has been designated a Breast Imaging Centre of Excellence by the American College of Radiology [ACR]. The Centre has achieved international accreditation only 15 months after launching a breast biopsy service.

By awarding the status of a Breast Imaging Centre of Excellence, the ACR recognizes that Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre has earned accreditation in digital mammography, breast biopsy, and breast ultrasound through breast imaging accreditation programmes in addition to the mandatory digital Mammography Accreditation Programme.

Centres designated as an ACR Breast Imaging Centre of Excellence have:

• Voluntarily gone through a rigorous review process to meet nationally accepted standards.
• Employed personnel who are well qualified, through education and certification, to perform and interpret medical images and conduct a range of breast biopsy procedures.
• Acquired the latest medical equipment for the diagnosis of breast cancer.
• Met or exceeded quality assurance and safety guidelines.

“Biopsy procedures at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre are typically conducted within one to two days after a physicians’ referral, giving women and men in the community access to specialists for important diagnostic testing in a timely manner,” said Tara Soares, Executive Director of Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre. “We’re very excited and proud to have achieved accreditation as a Breast Imaging Centre of Excellence in such a short period of time”.

The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 32,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians and medical physicists with programmes focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.

Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre is the only facility in Bermuda with a dedicated Breast Specialist Radiologist devoted to breast care and diagnosis. Dr. David Green who joined the Centre in December 2011 with 22 years of experience, is available daily to all men and women who need routine screenings or further diagnostic procedures.

On-site capabilities and services include digital mammography, breast ultrasound, minimally invasive breast biopsies and bone density tests. Dr. Green meets with all diagnostic and biopsy patients and is able to provide feedback right away. In Dr. Green’s first year of conducting breast biopsies at Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre, he performed 160 breast biopsy and cyst aspiration procedures diagnosing 49 cases of breast cancer.

Bermuda Cancer and Health Centre is the only non-profit charity that provides diagnostic imaging and free health services to the community. With the ongoing support of patients, physicians, fundraising events, donations and corporate sponsorships, the Centre is able to cover the cost of mammograms, ultrasound, breast biopsies and bone density assessments enabling those without insurance or the ability to pay to receive medical care.
