CellOne Launches Typhoon Text Relief Effort

November 13, 2013

CellOne announced today [Nov 13] the availability of text donations to support the relief efforts of the Bermuda Red Cross in the Philippines.

“There are many residents in Bermuda looking for a way to contribute to the aid desperately needed in the Philippines.” says Frank Amaral, CellOne CEO.

“Fundraising efforts are under way and we are happy to provide yet another vehicle to expedite the process by offering text donations. CellOne will also be matching donations from customers up to a total of $10,000.”

The Director of the Bermuda Red Cross, Ann Spencer-Arscott welcomes the CellOne partnership with these words, “We’re thrilled to be working with CellOne in this fundraising effort to be able to raise as much money to help the disaster victims in the Philippines.”

CellOne Postpaid customers can text the message ‘HELP’ to short code 90999 to donate to the cause up until November 30th. With each text message sent, a $10 charge will be added to a customer’s bill.

Donation boxes will also be available in all 3 CellOne store locations for Prepaid customers and anyone else wishing to contribute. 100% of the proceeds go to the Bermuda Red Cross.

Typhoon Haiyan made landfall on November 7, making history books as the strongest typhoon to ever strike land and causing widespread destruction throughout the Philippines.

The aftermath of the storm has left much of the country in desperate need of aid, particularly for those in Tacloban City, an urban area of more than 200,000 people that has been nearly completely destroyed.

A shortage of food and clean water throughout the country is pushing the human toll – already standing at 1,833 dead, 2,623 injured, and 84 missing – even higher.

Nations around the world are coming together in order to provide aid, but the widespread destruction in the Philippines has made it impossible for convoys to reach the people who need it most, leaving aid workers to collect money as they attempt to clear the massive amounts of rubble and debris.

The island is home to some 2,000 Filipinos, and some 300 people attended a fundraiser this weekend put on by the Association of Filipinos in Bermuda which raised $10,000.

In addition, Digicel announced their text donation campaign yesterday, and also stated they will be making a $10,000 donation towards the relief efforts.
