If you appreciate poetry, music, cultural expression, and multi-talented artists, then you won’t want to miss the performances happening at The Chewstick Neo-Griot Lounge, in their intimate artist performance series, Griot Sessions.

Starting on Thursday, December 12 with talented poet, Yesha Townsend, quickly followed on Saturday, December 14 with Jorge Suarez, these events will showcase excellence in entertainment, amazing artists and their multitude of gifts.

They will share their stories with their audiences in a program focused on highlighting not only the talents of participants, but also their unique backgrounds.

On Thursday, December 12 at 7.00pm, Yesha Townsend will be featured in an evening filled with thoughtful and deft poetry, as well as a demonstration of her talent for beat-making, songwriting, and poetry that she has honed overseas and is ready to share with Bermuda.

Ms. Townsend is a poet and rapper, who takes her craft seriously and is part of two bands: DONNA and Stop tha Black Sheep, both of which have led her to share the stage with Toki Wright, Mayda, Kristoff Krane, and Joe Horton of No Bird Sing.

She has also self-published two chapbooks: the w(R)ite of spring and Crosshatching, the latter of which will be available for purchase at her Thursday night performance.

Ms. Townsend an invaluable member of the Chewstick Foundation team, having co-facilitated the Chewstick Foundation’s Youth Poetry and Spoken Word Club, ChewSLAM, for the 2012 and 2013 terms, culminating in the Annual Brave New Voices Poetry Festival in those same years, in San Francisco and Chicago respectively.

Her performance will show that she is not only a teacher, but an artist in her own right, and will be a testament to her skills as a storyteller and her creative ability to seamlessly mix classic poetry, hip hop, Bermudian flair, and rhythm.

Jorge Suarez is a perfect complement to Ms. Townsend as he also effortlessly weaves a multitude of inspirations to achieve a style and rhythm of his own. His performance with Ms. Townsend will be a lead up to his own Griot Session, just two days later on Saturday, December 14 at 10.00pm.

On that night, Jorge Suarez will sing a fond farewell to Bermuda, The Chewstick Foundation and friends he’s made while on the island. He will be accompanied by a mix of musicians including the D.I.A. band, Calvin Worrell, and a few special surprise guests. He’ll share his hip hop inspired folk music, which is itself a medley born of his Cuban-Mexican heritage and hunger for knowledge.

Jorge’s show will take the audience on his musical journey, sharing the stories of his family, his friends, and the valuable lessons he’s learned along the way.

Entry for the events will cost $10, payable at the door. Seating is limited, so get your there early; on Thursday, the doors open at 6.00pm, and on Saturday they’ll open at 9.30pm.

Don’t miss the opportunity to see two different, but beautiful celebrations of dynamic talent and inspiring art. For more information call 292-2439 or email info@chewstick.org.

  1. Hmmmm says:

    Where are our people,?
    Where are our people?
    Greed led to now’s need,
    Sewed the rottenest of seed,
    Our people,
    Our People,
    When did Our become Mine?
My people, Myyyy …I did not sign!!!
    You don’t own a people,
And nor do we follow you.
    A Messiah, for hire
    The loudest political crier,
We’ve stopped and put out that fire,
    We, that’s us and our.
    Bermudian are we, that’s us.
We won’t catch your selfish political bus
    Stop, this is my stop.
