Golf: Aon Benfield Fecchio Cup Day #1 Results
Yesterday [Jan 02] marked the first round of the 31st Annual Aon Benfield Fecchio Cup hosted by the Port Royal Golf Course in blustery conditions. Port Royal Golf Course continues to be in fine shape with Dennis Pilgrim and his team on the grounds staff doing a fantastic job.
In the 16 – 18 division, Cory DeSilva held his nerve best in the wind and turned in a solid round of 6 over par 77 to lead the way. Sam Wehmeyer recovered from a triple bogey start to finish the day one back after a round of 7 over par 78.
Cory and Sam have put a little daylight between themselves and the rest of the field with newcomer Mykal Donkin leading the chasing pack and sitting in third place after a round of 87.
Arriek Douglas struggled to adjust back to Bermuda’s hills and winds, finishing with 92. Daniel Hetzel and Jordan Saunders will be looking to claw their way back into the race for third place after rounds of 95 and 99, respectively.
The 13 – 15 division remains tight heading into day two, with Mikus Ming taking a slim two shot lead after a first round of 81. Mikus had the low round of all divisions going through the front nine at one over par, but a few hiccups on the back nine brought him back to the field.
Port Royal members Alex Mason and Brady Cordeiro put their local knowledge to good use with 83 and 84 respectively. Joining Brady in third place is Kheary Swan.
Dakota Lamb is only one stroke further back after an 85 and Joe Waters will be looking to make up a few shots today after his round of 88, still only 7 shots behind. Benjamin Barnett rounds out the division after a round of 96.
The open red division saw Luke Watson show no signs of rust from his time in boarding school, promptly dispatching a long, straight drive down off the first tee. Luke continued his fine play for the whole round, turning in a fine score of 91.
Kenny Leseur is threatening to find his form again after a round of 97 marred by a couple of bad holes and he is looking forward to chasing Luke down over the next two rounds.
The race for third place is tight, with Tyler Emery currently in third after a round of 102, closely followed by Joe Watson [103] and Alex Withers-Clarke [109]. John Dragonetti, making his debut in a BJGA major event, turned in a respectable 112 for his first round at Port Royal.
The weather will be the main factor today with the BJGA organisers hopeful that the winds will subside just enough to keep Port Royal playable and give the juniors a good test of golf and their patience.
