Washington Office Hosts Bermuda Day In DC

May 22, 2014

The Government of Bermuda’s Overseas Representative Office in Washington, D.C., hosted the First Official Bermuda Day in Washington, D.C., today, [May 22].

The reception welcomed members of the US Congress, diplomats, representatives from leading non-governmental organizations [NGO’s], US business leaders as well as various leaders of Bermuda’s government and business community.

A spokesperson said, “The event provided an opportunity for leaders of the business, political, and diplomatic community to network and celebrate Bermuda’s national holiday, commemorating its multi-cultural heritage, educating them on Bermuda and celebrating the start of summer.

“Washington, DC, as the capital of the United States, is host to leading U.S. government officials as well as diplomats and leaders of organizations with interests in domestic and international public policy, trade and cultural affairs. Bermuda’s relationship with the United States is robust and healthy.

“This event, which is similar to events held by other countries and jurisdictions, helps to solidify these ties and builds awareness and respect.

“Approximately 120 people attended the private, invitation-only event, where welcome remarks were delivered by Overseas Representative Ms. Cheryl Packwood. The event was sponsored by the Bermuda Tourism Authority, and David Dodwell, Chairman, delivered remarks.

“Goslings supplied Black Seal Rum for the event and allowed the Bermuda Representative Office to highlight one of its most widely-known products. Robert Symonds, renowned steel band musician, gave a stellar rendition of some of Bermuda’s best and traditional music.”

Commenting on the event and the celebration of Bermuda’s rich culture, Ms. Packwood said, “This was a great opportunity for us to continue to build strong relationships with U.S. and international leaders in Washington, D.C.

“Tonight we were able to bring together people from all corners of the United States and the world on the rooftop of our offices to celebrate our heritage, and in doing so, we continued our outreach efforts. We appreciate the support afforded to us by the Bermuda Tourism Authority as our partners in the event.

“Having been to a number of events hosted by other jurisdictions, countries and organizations, I know that these efforts really do make a difference in our relationships and the ability to find common understanding and establish respect.”

Can some-one enlighten me why this holiday is called, Bermuda Day? I understand the historical background and significance of Cup Match but Bermuda Day?

To my knowledge this is an English (UK)holiday, how and when did it become Bermuda Day?
