Hornets To Forfeit, Final Awarded To Robin Hood

January 2, 2015

[Updated] The Bermuda Football Association has confirmed that due to fielding an ineligible player during the Friendship Final yesterday [Jan 1], Dandy Town “will forfeit the match and the Friendship Final is awarded to Robin Hood Football Club.”

A statement from the BFA said, “The Bermuda Football Association’s Competitions Committee has ruled as follows regarding the outcome of the Friendship Final played on Thursday, January 1st, 2015 at the National Sports Center:

“The Competitions Committee has ruled that Dandy Town fielded an ineligible player [unnamed substituted] namely Kevin Hurdle per the Associations Disciplinary Code Article 39.1[d] under Ineligible Players.

“As a result, the Competitions Committee ruled in accordance with Article 39.2 under Schedule of Sanctions as it relates to Sanctions against the winning team fielding an ineligible player that Dandy will forfeit the match and the Friendship Final is awarded to Robin Hood Football Club.”

Update Jan 3, 8.42am: President of Robin Hood FC Derek Stapley said, “While we respect the BFA’s decision we feel very sorry for Jomar and everyone at Dandy Town for the way things turned out – an unfortunate mistake means they not only forfeit the Friendship Cup but they miss out on the tremendous achievement of holding all five major trophies at the same time.

“The game was played with a high level of intensity, competitiveness and sportsmanship with the players battling for every minute in an entertaining end to end match that produced 7 excellent goals. For the Robin Hood, and any other team in the same position, it is not the way you want to win a game or a trophy, especially given this was our premier team’s first ever cup final. Kyle and the team did incredibly well reaching the final and we are proud of the way they played, especially for coming back from 3-0 down to tie the match, only to lose in the last five minutes to Damon Ming’s superb solo effort.

“We have a fairly young group of guys along with a couple of seasoned players and they are coming together tremendously as a team in our first season back in the top flight. Dandy Town are a great team with a superb coaching staff and we hope to have the opportunity of playing against them in another cup final in the future.”

They should have had a replay up nationals again

    • Kangoocar says:

@john doe, so, the cheating team should be given a break???? Get real champ!!!!! When rules are broken, there needs to be consequences!!!! Your type of thinking is exactly why society has become what it has!!!!

    • Geesh says:

Why , you cheat and get caught you pay! You don’t get taught a lesson by being given a second chance to win fairly!

    • Mr.B says:

A replay? Lol thats a joke. They had enough time to adjust the team sheet and add him in before kick off especially considering kick off was late. If anything the match official shouldnt have let him on the pitch knowing he werent on the team sheet. #HoodHoodHood

  2. hmmm says:

It’s a shame as it was a good game, but the rules are the rules.

  3. John T says:

This problem should not be happening. If a player is neither on the game sheet or match card he should not be on the team bench. I am surprised that the (4th) official allowed him to enter the field.

It is plain as daylight to see. If a team uses an illegible player that team forfeits the game.

  4. Tired Mum says:

The fourth official has nothing to do with this! According to BFA competition rules, it is the Match Commissioner’s role to check team sheets and cards. Match Officials are there purely to ensure the Laws of the Game are adhered to, not to perform the administrative duties of the teams. The ultimate responsibility lies with the team officials, who clearly completed the necessary paperwork incorrectly.

  5. me says:

Did the match oficall do his job did he check the team sheet and players cards before the game? No. And he wasn’t even on the bench when sub’s where made. Looks like bfa need to step it up!!!

  6. wilson says:

The bottom line: DandyTown has played way too many cup finals to not know that a player they were bringing on the field had to be on the player list prior to game or before he can on the field. Clearly no one was paying attention as the whole game was played – celebration was held before it was even realized. Just makes u wonder about 1)how is BFA operating 2)how many times Dandy Town has done it and actually gotten away with it…..

    • If it was done before we would have paid the price and not made the same mistake. We win trophies on our ability on the field thank you!!!!!!

  7. I McHunt says:

Although Match Commissioners do tend to check the team sheets it is still the responsibility of the Referee or one of his assistants. I believe that at most games the Match Commissioners check them because most officials nowadays don’t turn up to their games early enough to fulfil their duties properly (sometimes they are offiating “double headers” and it can’t be avoided – often it is not!). At a major final this is one of the main duties of the fourth official, although they wouldn’t have checked the player involved as he wasn’t on the team sheet. Any substitutions are solely the responsibility of the 4th official and are nothing to do with the Match Commissioner.

    • Tired Mum says:

Not strictly true I am afraid, nowhere in the Laws of Association Football does it states that referees/assistants are responsible for administration of team sheets etc. In Bermuda, one of the responsibilities of the Match Commissioners is to check team sheets, official cards etc and make sure all is correct administratively. For any normal league fixture, referees are given the team sheets after the match by the Match Commissioner I believe. For those games that have 4th officials appointed they are there solely to assist the referee in the application of the laws; in the case of a substitution they are there merely to oversee the procedure (one off, one on). The paperwork for any substitution is given to the Match Commissioner to process.

Nobody will field an ineligible player again, well done.

  11. Wayne Williams says:

I am… sorry to say……no actually I am not for this absolute lack of attention to detail. For a team that has been in the Premier League since 1982 and an administration that has been around ever since that time, it is inexplicable that a BLUNDER like this should happen, particularly with a Cup Final at stake!!

The players and fan should hold the administrative staff who is responsible to ensure the team sheet and cards are correct solely at fault for depriving Dandy Town of the Friendship Trophy!!………….there should also be a form of disciplinary action meted out to those responsible!

This action should be likened to someone bringing the game into disrepute.

I do hope in future that BFA makes a ruling that every team under the auspices of the BFA has a “Team Sheet/Card & Player Verifier” to ensure this NEVER happens again!
