BTA Recruiting For KBB Clean-Up Mission

May 12, 2015

The Bermuda Tourism Authority [BTA] is teaming up with Keep Bermuda Beautiful [KBB] this weekend [May 16] for the charity’s annual island-wide National Clean-Up Day.

The BTA is calling on hospitality stakeholders to join the clean-up mission on May 16 and has sent a volunteer recruitment email to its class of 400 Certified Tourism Ambassadors [CTAs].

“The KBB mission is fundamental to the tourism industry,” said BTA CEO Bill Hanbury.

“Keeping Bermuda beautiful is essential to our success as a destination. That’s why we’re mobilising our own people to pitch in and recruiting other resources to help out as well.

“I hope when our tourism industry partners hear about the new tourism aspect of the island-wide Clean-up they’ll come out and join us.”

The KBB island-wide clean-up is Saturday, May 16 from 9.00am to 12.00pm and any resident or visitor is welcome to chip in individually wherever they like.

Meantime, teams pre-registered with KBB and are assigned specific locations to beautify. The BTA is constructing three teams to work at Clearwater Beach, Warwick Long Bay and Admiralty House Park – where a team from the BTA recently highlighted cliff jumping.

CTAs who participate in the clean-up will earn renewal points toward their re-certification as a tourism ambassador in 2016.

“KBB is very excited to team up with the BTA and focus on getting our beaches and parks in tip top shape as we begin the summer season,” said KBB Executive Director Anne Hyde.

“We believe that Bermuda’s greatest asset is its natural beauty. The gorgeous pink sand beaches and lush wooded parks don’t stay pristine all by themselves. So it is wonderful to welcome the Certified Tourism Ambassadors and other volunteers to participate. Even Oracle Team USA has signed up to volunteer for the event.”

Mr Hanbury said, “With reduced government resources it’s doubly important that the tourism industry steps up to help fill the gap. Ultimately we want every public beach, park and trail island-wide to be pristine and picturesque for residents and visitors alike.”

Tourism industry partners who want to join the BTA at Clearwater Beach, Warwick Long Bay or Admiralty House Park should pre-register online or call Glenn Jones at 279.5588. The BTA’s pre-registration will close at 5.00pm on Thursday, May 14.

Other volunteers interested in joining the event should call KBB to register at 295.5142 or email kbb@northrock.bm. If volunteers clean their street and have not pre-registered with KBB they should make contact afterwards to let officials know so Public Works or the Department of Parks can be coordinated to pick up the collected debris.

This will also help KBB record total statistics from the 2015 National Clean-up effort.

Unfortunately we’re our own worse enemy when it comes to keeping our roads, trail-ways and beaches clean. As we all can blatantly see in the bushes and over walls; bottles cans etc. have been disposed by them who can’t wait to get to the next trash can.
Here is an opportunity for every able-bodied person to come out and kick-in. Dedicate a few hours to help us “Keep Bermuda Beautiful.”
