Paddle Boarder Mistaken For ‘Person In Distress’

April 1, 2016

Police and vessels responding to a call for assistance investigated reports of a “person apparently in distress” in the water off Pink Beach Club on March 26, with “extensive searching” yielding no results, and a paddle boarder later informed Marine Police that he was in the area at the time and may have been mistaken for a person in distress.

A Bermuda Maritime Operations spokesperson said, “On Saturday, March 26 at 1.20pm, a 911 caller at Pink Beach on South Shore reported a person apparently in distress approximately 200 yards offshore from Pink Beach Club.

“While the reporting source remained on scene keeping a lookout, RCC Bermuda dispatched a police land unit to investigate from the shore while Bermuda Radio commenced calls to any vessels in the area able to assist. Marine Police boat ‘Heron III’ launched under speed from Dockyard, with local vessels ‘Hurdy Gurdy’ and ‘Lucky Nut’ also responding to calls for assistance.

“While the original reporting party and police were observing from shore the person was lost from sight, thought to be progressing towards the Mid Ocean Club area. Shoreline and extensive searching yielded nothing with all units standing down a while later.

“Given the absence of persons reported overdue, the incident was closed pending further information. Following press coverage of this incident, a paddle boarder contacted Marine Police the next day to report that he was paddle boarding in the area around the time of incident and believes it was him that was mistaken for someone in distress.

“He offered his apologies and reassurance that a float plan would be filed with Bermuda Radio in the future.”

someone please advise this fellow that in 1940-59 or there abouts a pilot crashed his plane about that far off St. David’s head…a rescue copter was sent out and spotted the pilot who waved to them in the water….the copter made a circle round to a lower elevation to lower a harness to pick him up…and the pilot was gone!

the pilot was wearing an air force like vest rated at two thousand pounds floatation capacity…it was gone too…
