Videos: Police Duckett Memorial Rugby Games
The annual Police Rugby Duckett Memorial matches were held on Saturday [Jan 11] at the National Sports Center.
The organisers previously explained, “The annual games are played in memory of George Duckett, a former Commissioner of Police who was assassinated in 1972.
“Duckett was a popular, larger than life Commissioner who had a commanding presence and stood at 6’5” tall and was well known as an ardent rugby fan. In 1973, the Bermuda Police Rugby Section commenced an Annual Memorial Game which is the longest running Memorial Game in Bermuda.”
The Women’s 2nd match ended 17 – 17, while the Bermuda Police Rugby Football Club Women First Team claimed a 15 – 10 win over The Rest.
The Bermuda Police Rugby Football Club Men’s First Team defeated The Rest 24-17, while the Police Mens Second Team defeated The Rest by a margin of 42 – 28.
There was an incident during the men’s match, which resulted in some of the players tussling just off the field. One player was seen on the ground for a few minutes and being attended to by personnel, however he eventually got up and appeared to be fine, while another player was sent off after the incident, which resulted in applause from some of the gathered crowd.
