City Of Hamilton Donates To Two Local Charities
The City of Hamilton’s Social Committee presented two cheques to assist charities today, with $3,000 going to Focus Counselling Services and $2,000 to Teen Haven.
A spokesperson said, “Every year the City’s Social Committee makes a donation to charities located within the City from funds collected through the sale of raffle tickets at the City’s staff Christmas party.
“As there was no staff Christmas Party this year due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Social Committee has donated monies which would otherwise be used to fund the Christmas party, to charity – with $3,000 going to Focus Counselling Services and $2,000 to Teen Haven.”
“Focus Counselling Services is a Substance Abuse Interventions Agency which has been a registered charity since 1993. Focus provides outreach, treatment and supportive residency to persons living with Substance Use Disorder.
“Teen Haven has been supporting Bermuda’s young teenage women since 1967 with the goal of empowering teens to maximize their potential and to increase their self-esteem and coping skills so that they can make healthier choices. The agency also recognizes students through its annual Outstanding Teen Awards program.”
“We choose charities in the City which we feel represent our core values of inclusivity, integrity and accountability,” explained the City’s Social Committee Chairperson Ms Kim Williams. “COVID-19 has hit Bermuda’s charitable sector particularly hard and we wanted to do our part in providing financial support to those charities which assist our most needy populations.”
Executive Director of Focus Counselling Services Leslie Grant said, “Focus Counselling Services is grateful for this donation and truly humbled by the show of support from the City of Hamilton. The donated funds will go toward supporting our drop-in centers, daily counselling, feeding and shower services.”
Teen Services Director Michelle Wade said, “We are truly grateful to the City of Hamilton for their continuous interest and support. The COVID-19 pandemic has had a direct impact on young mothers and children and the support provided will be used to assist this population’s ongoing needs.”
Over the Christmas season the City also donated $10,000 to the Cathedral Feeding Programme and $5,000 to Tomorrow’s Voices in lieu of traditional events that would have otherwise taken place if not for COVID-19.
