Video: BIU President Press Conference
Bermuda Industrial Union [BIU] President Chris Furbert is holding a press conference this afternoon [Sept 3], and we will have additional coverage later on and in the meantime the live video is below. This follow after the Union held a two day protest last week and announced that they will hold a weekly protest starting the week of September 13 which “will continue until the Government comes back to the table in good faith to engage in dialogue to reach a fair resolution of this matter.”
Update: The live broadcast has concluded and the 35-minute replay is below
So, if I understand the new proposals correctly, it is ok for an amendment to be proposed whereby, employee contributions formally paid to charities be now paid to the union, but the union does not wish for those employees whose contributions they are now receiving, to be allowed to vote in a union desertification.
If I were contributing dues to the union, I feel I should be allowed to vote on desertification.
Is there any club or organization you know of that allows associate members to have full voting rights?
Do any clubs require mandate that associate members pay full fees?
I know many where it is the choice of the associate member to be a member in the first place.
Is there any club or organization that you are made (by law) to pay monthly or weekly dues to, even if you don’t want to join and get hardly any tangible benefits from?
There are not many, if any, that would not invite you to their premises or social occasions or offer some tangible benefit other than a similar pay cut or increase as their members have voted for, and not contact you, despite taking and spending your hard earned money.
It is arguable that the government is not likely to give Govt employees a raise and not also give that same raise to the non union members, which happened in all previous years as far as I know.
Does he not understand that the general public does not agree with him or the biu? Get back to work! Entitled and selfish
Looks like Furbert has blinked and realized Burt has called his bluff. There was no way Furbert would win this, because he so muddied the issues who knows what the real issues are, although it appears the BIU want to destabilize the Government. Not a good idea with IB controlling the financial survival of Bermuda. Can’t wait to sign the petition, it won’t be polite.
Furbert doesn’t give a crap about all this. He wants a cushy Senate seat for himself, his puppet Zane reinstated, and Jamahl appointed as his puppet Premier. That’s what this is all about.
I heard hes looking for a seat in the OBA.:)
I often wish there were up and down votes and or emoji’s on this site!
