Photos: NMB Dr Grundy Prizegiving Ceremony
On December 8, Minister of Education Diallo Rabain gathered with Bermuda students, teachers, family members, sponsors, judges and National Museum of Bermuda [NMB] staff to celebrate the 27 finalists of the Dr. Reg Grundy Annual Youth Photography Competition: Your Eyes on Bermuda.
Minister Rabain shared: “Congratulations to all participating students and parents and teachers who encouraged their students to enter the competition. Now in year four, it is very encouraging to see the success of this competition and how it is growing. This competition is an excellent opportunity for Bermuda’s young people to develop their creativity and patience and enhance their visual literacy and ability to see the world around them in unique ways. Being engaged in the arts and developing an appreciation for the cultural and natural environment sets children up to be responsible and caring citizens. Thank you to Mrs. Joy Grundy, sponsors and the National Museum of Bermuda for providing this great opportunity for Bermuda’s young people.”
An NMB spokesperson said, “The competition was launched in 2019 in partnership with Mrs. Joy Chambers Grundy and NMB, in memory of Dr. Reg Grundy, AC, OBE [an Australian media icon, avid photographer and former resident of Bermuda]. The competition was open to all local photography enthusiasts aged 7-18 and was designed to inspire the next generation of photographers and encourage an appreciation for Bermuda’s natural and cultural environment.
“Local judges included renowned photographer and winner of the 2022 Charman Prize Antoine Hunt, Dr. Deborah Atwood, NMB Curator and Chinni Mahadevan, Reg Grundy Photographic Libraries Curator. They chose the finalists from hundreds of submissions, submitted by 28 different schools in Bermuda.
“Students submitted photos under the following themes: Bermuda Families, Bermuda Buildings and Bermuda Nature in three age categories, 7-10, 11-14 and 15-18. Winners received Iron Kids Accounts at Clarien Bank [amounts of $500, $300, and $200 based on age group], runners up received $150 gift cards to Brown & Co. stores, and the school with the most submissions – Mount Saint Agnes – won a $1,500 gift certificate to AF Smith for school supplies. Winners and runners up photographs are on display on the second floor of Commissioner’s House at NMB, with winners, runners up and honorable mentions featured online at: www.nmb.bm/rg-photo-competition and in the next edition of NMB’s MARITimes magazine.
“Joy Yammine of BHS won Best in Show and her age group [11-14] in the Bermuda Families category. She was awarded a $300 Iron Kids account and was presented with a Canon EOS DSLR camera with lenses, memory card, filters and monopod, donated by Mrs. Grundy.”
Elena Strong, Executive Director of NMB, said: “Thank you to Mrs. Joy Grundy and our local sponsors, AF Smith, Phoenix Stores and Clarien Bank for their sponsorship of this competition. The calibre of student photographs increases each year, and we are so honoured to have student art hanging on the walls of the National Museum. For those who entered this year but were not selected as finalists, I encourage you to continue observing the world around you, snap away and submit again next year!”
