Bermuda distance runner Kahzi Sealey insists he is full of confidence and will push for victory in the Powerade 5K Run tomorrow [July 2].

The 19-year-old enjoyed a superb Carifta Games in the Bahamas in April, winning two silver medals [the 1,500 and 5,000 metres], and came second in the 5K in the Aecon Bermuda National Championships at the Flora Duffy Stadium last weekend.

“I knew going into Carifta I had a lot of promise to do well,” Sealey told Bernews. “I have a lot more confidence than I had before.

“I now know I can go into any race situation knowing I can do well. That wasn’t always the case.

“I have high expectations of myself because of how I placed at Carifta.”

Sealey, who finished second behind Ryan Outerbridge in the 5K at the National Championships, expects his Bermuda team-mate Kallan Richardson to be his biggest rival in the Powerade 5K.

Richardson, 17, came third in the 5K at the National Championships.

“Kallan’s a good competitor; it should be an interesting race,” Sealey said of the Powerade 5K. “I expect him to do well. We’ve done some long runs and tempo runs together.”

Sealey, who has graduated from Christ School in Arden, North Carolina, and will attend the University of North Florida, has a 5K personal best of 15min 37sec.

The Powerade 5K Walk and Run, formerly the Nature Valley 5K, starts and finishes at Butterfield and Vallis in Orange Valley, Devonshire.

The event will have running and walking, with the walkers starting at 7.45 am and the runners at 8 am.
