Danté Leverock said he is happy with his role as one of the most experienced members of the Bermuda team and has backed them to make a positive start to their Concacaf Nations League campaign.

Bermuda face French Guiana in their opening League B, Group C match at the Flora Duffy Stadium on Friday [September 8] in Michael Findlay’s first game as head coach.

A former Bermuda captain, Leverock is among the elder statesmen in the youthful squad along with Reggie Lambe, Roger Lee and Dale Eve and believes their extra know-how can help newcomers such as Jalen Commissiong, Aunde Todd and Remy Coddington.

“It was good to get called up, and I’m ready to play whatever role they have for me,” Leverock told Bernews. “The main thing is helping the transition of the younger players.

“I’ll do my part and always try to be a leader and set an example for the youngsters.”

Findlay was only appointed last month and has not had long to work with his new charges; however, Leverock insists the Canadian is already getting his message across to the group.

“He’s very structured, focuses on small details, and likes things done on time,” the former Sligo Rovers defender said.

“He’s creating a professional environment and has integrated well with the squad.

“He’s added his flow to things, and hopefully, we can get the results on the field.”

Leverock, who captained Bermuda when they previously played in League A of the Nations League, has challenged them to win their group, including Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Belize, and regain their top-flight status.

“We want to get to League A and return to the Gold Cup,” Leverock said. “You need to get a result in your first game because that sets up the positive run you need. We haven’t won in a long time.”

Although Leverock has one eye on coaching, having launched the DaRock Elite Performance Academy this year, he insists he is focusing on playing this season after rejoining Dandy Town, his boyhood club.

“I’m transitioning into coaching, and I want to be around the national team environment to help me excel in that direction,” said Leverock, who could not play domestically last season after stepping down as Robin Hood player-coach.

“Playing locally for Dandy Town, I’m in good shape and taking it seriously.

“I’m trying to win things under coach Aaron Denkins at Town.”
