Remember When: Women Win 1st Football Gold
It has been 11 years since the Bermuda women’s national football team won the gold medal after beating Greenland in a penalty shootout at the NatWest Island Games on home soil on July 18, 2013.
Coach Naquita Robinson’s side claimed the title in dramatic style, with the game going down to the wire with a penalty shootout in which Bermuda goalkeeper Stacy Babb made two vital saves after the final finished goalless.
Bermuda won the shootout 5-4.
Robinson also led Bermuda to gold at the Island Games in Guernsey, the Channel Islands, last summer, defeating the Western Isles 4-0 thanks to goals from Akeyla Furbert, Jya Ratteray-Smith and a brace from LeiLanni Nesbeth.
Furbert was also part of the squad that won in 2013.
