The 5th Annual Shotocup Kata Classic was recently held at the Whitney Institute.
A spokesperson said, “The 5th Annual Shotocup Kata Classic, held at the Whitney Institute, marked another significant milestone in Bermuda’s martial arts history. With fierce competition, remarkable performances, and breakout stars, the event showcased the immense talent and dedication of karateka from across the island.
“One of the highlights of the day was Ethan White, who emerged as a breakout star. Competing as a novice in the Under 10 Intermediate Male division, Ethan not only stepped up to a higher level but also clinched the Gold medal. His outstanding performance in a tougher division demonstrated his determination and potential, making him one to watch in future competitions.
“The event also saw strong performances from athletes representing the Bermuda Uechi-Ryu Academy, the newest dojo to join the Bermuda Karate Federation. Tobiah Goodchild, Jadon Spriggs, Jayden Lambert, and Will Spriggs all secured gold medals in their respective divisions, showcasing the growing strength and presence of their dojo in Bermuda’s karate scene.
“Another standout moment was Talia Fox, who successfully defended her title in the Over 21 Advanced Female and Black Belt Kata Combine divisions. In a short speech following her victory, Talia encouraged her fellow athletes to continue supporting local competitions and martial arts development in Bermuda. She emphasized the importance of competing not only for personal growth but for the future of martial arts on the island.”
Shotocup Director Edmond Johnson reflected on the incredible journey of Shotocup, reminding everyone that the company was founded during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. “We started Shotocup with a mission to provide athletes with a platform to showcase their skills, even when the world was at a standstill. Today, we continue to push that mission forward by elevating Bermuda’s martial arts scene through events like the Kata Classic,” said Johnson.
The spokesperson said, “The Shotocup Kata Classic, now in its fifth year, has grown into one of the most anticipated martial arts events in Bermuda. This year’s event saw exceptional performances across various divisions:
