Service Medal Established To Honor Soldiers
The Operational Service Medal [Bermuda] has been established to recognize the service of Royal Bermuda Regiment soldiers.
A spokesperson said, “Soldiers who faced civil unrest and disturbances in the 1960s and 1970s or helped to manage Covid-19 regulations in 2020 and 2021 are among those who could be eligible for the Operational Service Medal [Bermuda].
“The medal has been established to recognise the sacrifice made by members of the Royal Bermuda Regiment during operational deployments at home and abroad.
“It was announced last month that His Majesty the King approved the award of the first Operational Service Medal [Bermuda], and that anyone who served from September 15, 1965 and meets qualifying criteria will be eligible.
“The RBR today provides more information about the qualifying eligibility criteria.
“Generally, the operations will have required mobilisation of the Royal Bermuda Regiment through an official Embodiment Order and will have been endorsed by the Governor and Commander-in-Chief.
“Serving or former RBR soldiers and officers will be eligible if they have, on Embodiment Orders from the Governor, completed 30 days accumulative operational service for one or more of the following: disaster relief; humanitarian assistance; security; other emergency operations that required risk or rigour.
“The operations may have been carried out in Bermuda or overseas.
“A list of recognised operations includes events that date as far back as 1965 and will be appropriately updated upon authorisation from the Governor.
“While most deployments were on home soil, operations in countries such as Jamaica, the Turks & Caicos Islands and Barbados are also covered.
“We are looking forward to awarding medals to serving soldiers in the first half of next year, followed by the award of medals to former soldiers starting from the second half of 2025.
“Any questions about the medal can be directed to the Chief Clerk of the Regiment at bermudaregiment@gov.bm.
“The Operational Service Medal [Bermuda] provides us with a wonderful opportunity to recognise the sacrifices of Royal Bermuda Regiment officers and soldiers, past and present, who were mobilised in support of operations locally and overseas.
“We already know the hard work our troops have put in, this is now a tangible acknowledgment that we hope they will treasure for years to come.”
