Review: Berkeley Stages Classic Cinderella
[Written by Dale Butler]
The Berkeley Institute’s Theatre Arts Program presented the classic “rags-to-riches” tale of Cinderella on April 25th and April 26th.
Described in pre-publicity as “bold and poetic reimagining of the beloved fairy tale, brought to life by an extraordinary cast of student performers whose, passion, courage, and artistry promise to leave audiences inspired.” Director Joelle Williams was able to reinforce her high standards of performance and the student cast did not let her down.
The students knew every word. No prompts, no stumbles. That’s discipline. The script did not give them surprises, but they gave us commitment . The gas slipper fit because they made it fit. For a lot of them, this is the first time for them being brave in front of a crowd. That’s worth more than a plot twist.
The sets were beautiful and the stage crew were almost invisible in changing them. The costumes were colourful and rich. Add all of this with the music, singing and backdrop, it was a good night of theatre with on site vendors.
Congratulations to the technical crew and all of the actors, including a large choir dressed in spotless white:
- Callahj Simmons: Cinderella
- Theodore Watkins: The prince
- Ja’leiyah Johnston: Step-mother
- Asha Peets and Sara Williams:Step-sisters
- Ronan Carreon and Arhyiah Taten brought regal presence to the King and Queen
- Adriana Harvey and Keegan Dyer: Fairy Godmothers
Dedicated senior performers were Callahj Simmons, Ja’leiyah Johnstonaaron Lugo, and Ronan Carreon. They held the stage; that takes guts. Thank you for being brave.
