Van Putten Named JABAI Poet-in-Residence
Bermudian poet and writer Melodye Mîcere Van Putten has been named the inaugural Poet-in-Residence for the James Arthur Baldwin Africologic Institute [JABAI], honoring her impactful contributions to culture and education.
A spokesperson said, “James Arthur Baldwin [1924-1987] was an extraordinary writer of essays, plays, criticism, and novels. Counting all of the significant leaders of his day as personal friends [King, Malcolm, Medgar Evers, Maya Angelou, and others], he was a powerful activist and catalyst for change during the turbulent 1960’s.
“JABAI was founded by Dr. Pamela D. Reed, Professor of English at Virginia State University. The James Arthur Baldwin International Symposium was a collaborative event between Virginia State University and the Petersburg Public Library Conference and Event Center and was held in late October 2024.
“As the Poet-in-Residence, Van Putten was tasked with offering libations and poetry during the three-day symposium which also featured cultural luminaries, including renown poet Nikki Giovanni, the creator of Kwanzaa Dr. Maulana Karenga, David Baldwin, the nephew of James Baldwin and founder of Third World Press, Dr. Haki Madhubuti. Best-selling authors Dr. Daniel Black of Clark Atlanta University and MK Asante of Morgan State University were also featured. At the conclusion of the symposium and Van Putten’s duties as Poet-in-Residence, Dr. Reed wrote, “Your brilliance is awe-inspiring. Thank you for gracing us with your presence.”
“Van Putten is a cultural worker of many talents. She is the author of nineteen books and is the founder of Ashay Programmes, providing various cultural offerings, including curriculum and programmes for children and adults. In addition to this recent honor, she is the winner of Citizens Uprooting Racism in Bermuda’s 2023 Racial Justice Award for her work creating independent, African-centered, community education programmes, Ashay University and Ashay Clubs. She is also the host of Channel 82’s Mwalimu Dropping Da Knowledge [MDDK], modeled after her lecture classes. Her books run the gamut from poetry and history to short stories and libations.
