Bermuda’s drivers filled their tanks for a charitable cause as part of the 56th Annual Gas-o-Rama event at Rubis Terceira’s North Shore gas station on Saturday [February 8].
Organised by Hamilton Lions Club, this year’s beneficiaries were the Special Olympics Bermuda, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the Western Stars Sports Club youth programme.
“A huge thank you to the Terceira’s family and staff for once again allowing us to host the Hamilton Lions Club 56th Annual Gas-O-Rama!” read a Lions Clubs of Bermuda social media post.
“Your generosity and support are truly appreciated.
“It was a fantastic day filled with community spirit, as Lions, Cubs, parents, and volunteers from Special Olympics Bermuda, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and the Western Stars Sports Club [aka Dandy Town] youth programme came together in the spirit of serving our community.”
The Hamilton Lions Club praised vice-president Velda V G Charlatta and her team for their “dedication and hard work” in ensuring another successful event.
“We also extend our gratitude to the Eastern Lions Club and Paget Lions Club for their support and assistance. Your help was invaluable in making this day a success!” the post added.
“Thank you to everyone who supported and contributed to this amazing day. Together, We Serve!”
The annual event began in 1969 after a friendly poker bet between the late Malcolm Terceira, who owned the gas station, and Edward “Teddy” Chapman, the Hamilton Lions Club president.
Mr Terceira vowed to give his horse away to whoever beat him at cards; however, Mr Chapman won and asked for the use of the gas station for a day instead. The event has raised more than $1 million for charity.
