Two Iguanas Found Aboard Ships In Bermuda

Thanks to the “vigilance of the crew on both vessels” two iguanas that were discovered on ships docked in Bermuda this past summer were prevented from actually entering Bermuda.

An article in Envirotalk, the quarterly newsletter of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, said, “This past summer two green iguanas were discovered on two different ships while docked in Bermuda. Luckily for us the vigilance of the crew on both vessels prevented these animals from leaving the ships and putting their feet on terra firma.

“Green iguanas have been identified as among the most invasive reptiles currently making their way through the Caribbean. Once established on a new island, they can cause a variety of problems to horticulture, agriculture, and infrastructure and are proving very difficult to remove.

“This is not the first time this species has tried to colonize Bermuda; in 2000 a young green iguana was caught wandering across the container port in Hamilton. These incidences serve to remind us how important biosecurity is in preventing the establishment of unwanted invaders to our island home.”
