The Bermuda national cricket team enjoyed a convincing ten-wicket win over Belize in a rain-affected match in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Sub-Regional Qualifier at the North Field, National Sports Centre, today [June 22].

Bermuda finally got their campaign under way after their opening match against the Bahamas was abandoned because of rain yesterday, with the teams sharing the points.

Rain ensured the match against Belize was reduced to 12 overs per side, with Bermuda captain Terryn Fray winning the toss and electing to bowl in a bid to capitalise on the dampness in the wicket.

Seam bowler Zeko Burgess made the breakthrough, bowling opener Nathan Banner with a superb yorker for two.

Luke Horan quickly claimed the second wicket with his lively seam bowling, removing Lawrence Banner for a duck with a full-length delivery.

Left-arm spinner Derrick Brangman, the vice-captain, reduced Belize to 13 for three after dismissing captain Maurice Castillo for two.

With Belize struggling on 35 for three after ten overs, rain returned to temporarily interrupt play.

Wickets continued to tumble when play resumed, with Alex Oxley and Greg Scott both stumped by wicketkeeper Sinclair Smith off the bowling of Dominic Sabir and Brangman for 22 and five respectively.

Ordell Casasola then fell for two, caught by Burgess off the bowling of Sabir.

The final wicket to fall was T’shaka Patterson, who was run out for nought, as Belize finished on 45 for seven from their 12 overs.

Brangman was the pick of the bowlers, taking two for nine from three overs.

Bermuda were set a target of 47 under the Duckworth-Lewis method and made an impressive start through big-hitting openers Onias Bascome and Delray Rawlins.

The pair chased down the target, reaching 48 without loss in just 5.2 overs. Bascome finished unbeaten on 31 and Rawlins on 17, although both batters survived dropped chances.

Fray said he was proud of his team’s efforts but said there was room for improvement.

“We sent our two biggest hitters to get the job done as quickly as possible,” Fray told Bernews.

“We want a nice strong net run-rate going into our next game.

“We remain positive and back ourselves to get the job done. We want to be in the driving seat heading into the final game.

“It was a good win. We would have liked a full 20 overs, but it was so important to play this game.

“Derrick Brangman and Dominic Sabir bowled well, and it was great for our debutants Isaiah O’Brien and Luke Horan to get a few overs each.”

Bermuda coach Cal Waldron praised his team’s performance.

“Our bowlers put Belize under a bit of a stranglehold,” he said. “Credit to the team for understanding the strategy of the day and executing it.

“We also executed well in the batting department. The wicket was a bit sticky and prevented us from striking the ball as cleanly as we would have liked.

“Overall, it was a good team performance.”

In today’s second game, Panama beat Brazil by 69 runs. Panama batted first, scoring 155 for four off 20 overs, with Parth Jayeshbhai Patel top-scoring with 51.

In reply, Brazil scored 86 for eight off their allotted overs.

Bermuda return to action against Panama at the same venue on Thursday at 10.30am.
