Funding Boost For Bermudian Film Project
A Bermudian filmmaker has moved a step closer to bringing his Afro-futuristic animated short film to the screen after securing additional funding for the project.
Alex-André Bassett began developing The Kazi: Village Rescue about six years ago. It was a spin-off idea from a short story he wrote nearly ten years ago, shortly before leaving Bermuda for Vancouver, Canada.
Since then, he has collaborated with animators and illustrators to bring his lead character, Andreas, to life while building the world the character inhabits.
A crowdfunding effort in January helped raise about 35 per cent of the estimated $25,000 production budget.
The project has also received funding from the Bermuda Arts Council’s Bermuda Onion Bulb grant and has now entered production.
“Growing up on the small island of Bermuda, I dreamed of seeing characters on screen who looked like us, sounded like us, moved through worlds inspired by our rhythms, our humour, our courage, and our culture,” Mr Bassett told Bernews in an interview in January.
“But those stories rarely existed. So, I decided to build one.”
Village Rescue follows Andreas, a fearless young hero who must save a village from a mysterious threat using wit, determination, heart and the help of an unexpected sidekick.
Mr Bassett plans to submit the finished film to international film festivals and make it available online shortly after.
He also plans to screen it locally.
